Since the late inception of the game, Indian cricket has marked with the presence of some of the finest stroke makers and orthodox cricketers who have absolutely channelized the entire dimensions of the game with their respective abilities. Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly and former Indian opener Virender Sehwag are two such players who brought this idea of an aggressive brand of cricket into play.

While Sehwag was famous for his aggressive attitude every time while opening the innings across all formats and Ganguly was known for his aggressive behaviour while captaining the Indian team during his reigns. But the former Indian skipper narrated a rather surprising incident recently which is also revealed by him in the to-be-released book, Eleven Gods, and a Billion Indians written by famous media reporter Boria Majumdar.

What is the incident?

The astonishing incident occurred following India’s loss in the final match of the tri-series against Sri Lanka in 2001. India reached the final after registering a thumping win against the Kiwis, courtesy a splendid 143-run opening wicket partnership between Sehwag and Ganguly, in which the former scored a magnificent hundred off just 70 balls. However, the in-form Sehwag then got dismissed early because of involving himself in a rather horrific run-out dismissal in the final clash against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

Sri Lanka batted first in that finale match and amassed a huge total of 295-5 in their quota of 50 overs. While during the important chase, India suffered a crucial blow as their in-form player got out early in the game. After Sehwag’s wicket, the Indian team kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were thus bowled out for 174 runs. However, after sinking in the dismal moments in the final clash, Sehwag decided to ring his captain’s doorbell at early morning time, following the day of the final encounter.

“He played a rank bad shot in the final and I was very upset with him. We lost the final to Sri Lanka and the next morning he came to see me at 5.30 am before he left for the airport on his way back to Delhi. I was in no mood to talk to him and said I will call him later. He needed to know his captain was not pleased with the way he batted in the final,” narrated Ganguly in the book, which will be released shortly.
