Pakistan lost a T20I series against Australia by 0-2, now the Men in Green are gearing up for the upcoming banter in the longer format against the same opponent. However, the team from the subcontinent lost the series in the shorter format but one positive thing that they can pick from that is the form of Babar Azam. He was at his helm best and amassed two brilliant half-centuries against the hosts. And, now the former skipper of Australia, Ricky Ponting has come up with his opinion on the young top-order batsman that can delight his fans.
Babar has emerged as the rising star in the batting line-up of Pakistan. He is ranked 2nd in T20Is, 3rd in ODIs and 15th in Tests. It is his consistency of making runs across all the formats because of which he has been compared with the likes of Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Kane Williamson and Joe Root.
Ricky Ponting is excited to watch Babar Azam perform in the Test series
Ricky Ponting feels that the cricketing world has not seen the best from Babar Azam till now. The 25-year-old is a fine batsman irrespective of his stats in the longer format of the game. He is also excited about how the young Pakistan batsman performs. The former player also recited that Babar is simply different from other players that he watched earlier in his life.
“We haven’t seen the best of him yet. Twenty-odd Tests for an average of 35 – he’s better than that. He averages 54 in one-day cricket at a strike-rate of about 90. He’s a very, very classy player. He’s a really exciting talent and probably the guy I’m looking forward to seeing the most this summer. I’ve seen the Aussies a lot and I’ve seen a lot of the Kiwis, but I’m really excited to see him. He could be anything,” the former skipper said as quoted by cricket.com.au
This will be the first time that Pakistan players will be donning whites after the commencement of ICC Test Championship. The first game of the two-match series against Australia will be starting from 21st of November at the Gabba in Brisbane.
