In the game between the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Mumbai Indians last week, Indian umpire S. Ravi failed to call a no-ball on Thursday and that led to a lot of backlashes. It’s not some rare sight where the Indian umpires commit such questionable blunders, especially in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

This incident wasn’t received well by the Star, who are the host broadcasters. Additionally, another Indian umpire Anil Chaudhary made an obtrusive blunder on Monday. In the game between the Kings XI Punjab and the Delhi Capitals, Punjab bowler Hardus Viljoen pitched the ball way outside the leg-stump, and yet the field the umpire signaled out and the Proteas batsman Colin Ingram was asked to walk. Ingram asked for a review and Anil Chaudhury’s decision was immediately reversed.

Following these blunders committed by the Indian umpires, a Star India official said that the DRS is not the primary decision-maker in case of dismissals and that the umpires should up their quality and be at par with the players in the league.

“The DRS cannot be saving the umpires and correcting the mistakes they are making. The Indian umpires need to up their game and minimise the errors they make. While it is human to make errors, a call as clear as the one on Monday cannot be missed by one of the senior umpires (Chaudhary).

We are concerned because the facilities being provided are top-class and then when you have such poor calls, it upsets everything. It doesn’t help when the standard of umpiring is questioned after every second game,” the official was quoted as saying in The Quint.

After the no-ball incident involving Lasith Malinga, a Star official had called out S.Ravi, accusing the umpire of being inattentive about the landing point of the bowler’s front foot. “Having gone through the slow-motion replay of the match feed, I can tell you for certain that Ravi wasn’t even looking at the front foot of the bowler. He was already looking at the batsman,” the official had said.
