On the back of a historic century from batter Will Smeed, Birmingham Phoenix went on to win against the Southern Brave in a group stage encounter of the 2022 The Hundred competition on August 10 (Wednesday). With the win over Southern Brave, the Phoenix have now reached the third spot in the points table.
Talking about the match, Phoenix’s openers Smeed and Chris Benjamin gave a steady start to their team. However, Benjamin was scalped soon. Skipper Moeen Ali joined Smeed in the middle as both batters took their team’s total past the 50-run mark. However, Moeen was soon cleaned up by James Fuller.
Batters Liam Livingstone (21 off 20 balls) and Matthew Wade (10 off 6 balls) also provided some contributions with the bat, but it was Smeed who thrashed the Brave’s bowling and became the first batter in the Hundred competition to score a century.
The right-handed batter stroked 101 runs off just 50 balls and smashed eight fours and six maximums as he remained unbeaten with his team scoring 176/4 in their allotted 100 deliveries. For Southern Brave, James Fuller, Marcus Stoinis, Chris Jordan, and Jake Lintott scalped one wicket each.
Southern Brave could not bat their full 100 deliveries
Chasing a big score of 177 runs, Southern Brave never looked in the competition as their openers James Vince and Quinton de Kock started with a bang but were scalped soon in order to score quickly. Australian star all-rounder Marcus Stoinis failed too as he scored just one run.
Several other batters including Alex Davies, Tim David, and Ross Whiteley got starts with the bat, but none of them managed to win the match for their team as they were all-out for just 123 in 85 balls, handing Birmingham Phoenix a victory by 53 runs.
Pacer Henry Brookes was excellent with the ball as he scalped a total of five wickets. Australia pacer Kane Richardson also bowled well and took three wickets for his side. Benny Howell and Tom Helm also scalped one wicket each.
