London Spirit broke their duck in the tournament after registering their first win against a hapless Welsh Fire at Lord’s, who remain winless in the competition so far and are languishing at the bottom of the table. Beth Mooney started with the bat for the capital side following excellent work from Freya Davies and Amelia Kerr in the bowling department.
Tammy Beaumont, the skipper of Welsh Fire, decided to have a bat after winning the toss as they failed to chase a target in all three previous encounters in the competition, and the skipper along with Sarah Bryce, provided a solid start to the team, stitching a 46 runs stand for the first wicket. But the team failed to capitalize after that strong platform as they kept losing wickets in a cluster.
The score would’ve made for an embarrassing read if not for a late riposte from Nicola Carey, who took the team’s total to a sub-par 119 at the end of the first innings. English pacer Freya Davies was their tormentor in chief, rattling the Welsh Fire’s top-order, scalping 3/25. Amelia Kerr, the young Kiwi, landed the killer blow by dismissing the well-set Sarah Bryce and Nicola Carey, returning with impressive figures of 2/14 in her 20-ball quota.
Beth Mooney’s blitz with the bat ensured a routine victory for the London side
Welsh Fire’s underwhelming score was unlikely to trouble the London Spirit batters and it proved to be the case. Australia’s trailblazing wicketkeeper-batter Beth Mooney launched a scathing attack on the bowlers, stitching a brisk 66-run stand with Danielle Gibson for the opening wicket.
Gibson was the aggressor in the opening stand but once she departed Mooney took it on herself to punish the opposition bowlers and registered a blistering half-century. Her unbeaten knock of 61 off just 39 deliveries, which included four boundaries, ensured that the capital side had no other hiccups in the chase and got home in a canter with eight wickets in the hut and 14 deliveries to spare. The Aussie legend was awarded the player of the match for her impressive outing with the bat and contribution of two stumpings from behind the wicket.
