Welsh Fire defeated the Northern Superchargers by 11 runs in Match 18 of the Hundred Women’s 2022 at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Friday, August 26. By the virtue of this win, the Welsh Fire have finally registered their first victory of the ongoing tournament. They would now be hoping to capitalize on it and maintain winning momentum as the season nears its business end.
The Superchargers, on the other hand, who have had a hot and cold tournament so far, did succeed in restricting their opposition to a manageable total, but a batting failure in the second innings meant that they fell short. They have now suffered their third loss in the competition and currently occupy the fifth spot with four points and a NRR of -0.349.
Welsh Fire register their first win
The coin landed in the favor of Welsh Fire skipper Tammy Beaumont, and she chose to bat first. Openers Sarah Bryce and Beaumont herself added 41 for the opening stand, but once the set duo was dismissed, the Welsh team started losing wickets at regular intervals.
An unbeaten 22-ball 31 from Annabel Sutherland helped the Welsh Fire post a respectable total of 123/6. Jenny Gunn was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2/20, while Katie Levick, Lucy Higham, and captain Hollie Armitage picked up a wicket each.
In reply, the Superchargers lost the key wicket of Alyssa Healy early, but the South African duo of Laura Wolvaardt (41) and skipper Hollie Armitage (40) kept their team in the hunt but unfortunately for the visitors, once the two were dismissed, they completely lost the plot. The Superchargers were eventually restricted to 112/6. For Welsh Fire, Nicola Carey was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/18, and Claire Nicholas finished with 2/17. Annabel Sutherland also picked up one wicket.
