Women’s Hundred was launched at a time when female cricketers didn’t have enough franchise-based tournaments. There was the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) in Australia and after that, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) introduced The Hundred for them, which allowed several cricketers to express themselves and make it to the national team.
When the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in India and Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) in West Indies operate with five and three teams, respectively, Women’s Hundred has eight teams, which in itself is a massive success. In 2021, there were doubts if the format would succeed, given its guidelines but the players enjoyed it and now it is one of the most successful women’s franchise tournaments in the world.
Oval Invincibles is the most successful team in the tournament, winning the championship twice - in 2021 and 2022. In 2021 particularly, Dane van Niekerk reigned supreme, scoring 259 runs in nine matches and finishing with the most runs in the tournament. Among bowlers, Tash Farrant was sensational, as she picked up 18 wickets.
In 2022, Suzie Bates starred with the bat for Oval while Alice Capsey, Eva Gray and Sophia Smale picked up eight wickets each. In 2023, Southern Brave played the final against Northern Superchargers.
The Braves defeated Superchargers by 34 runs to clinch their maiden title. Georgia Adams had a stunning campaign as she picked up 16 wickets - the most wickets by a player in the tournament. Danni Wyatt, on the other hand, was the star with the bat.
In 2024, London Spirit will square off against Welsh Fire in the final. Whichever team wins it, will be their maiden title across both men’s and women’s.
