The new Perth Stadium will host the fifth ODI match between Australia and England on January 28. The Western Australia Government confirmed the above news on Monday (November 20) that cricket got the nod ahead of Australian Rules Football, which is the most popular sport in the state. This will be the first time that the 60,000-seat stadium will host an international match.

It was also said that Big Bash side Perth Scorchers will play their final games in the new stadium if they qualify, but the regular matches will be held at the WACA. Cricket Australia had earlier planned to open the new stadium with the third Ashes Test match but it didn’t turn according to the plan. The WACA will host its final international match- Ashes Test next month. It has been a fan favorite venue for 47 years. All the international matches involving India, South Africa, England and BBL games will be shifted to the new stadium.

Honor for our sport: Sutherland

James Sutherland, CA chief executive, said the ODI at the new stadium was a major showpiece for cricket. “For cricket to host the first major sporting event at Perth Stadium is a huge honour for our sport, and given it’s an Australia-England fixture, we are confident that will be able to celebrate history being made with a sold-out stadium,” he said.

Christina Matthews, the WACA chief executive, said the match would showcase Perth Stadium to a global audience. “Not only will we be able to reach a larger live audience through increased capacity, the ODI will showcase the new stadium to a large global televised audience,” she said. “Playing a final Ashes Test and regular BBL matches at the WACA Ground and passing the torch to Perth Stadium with an England ODI, is a fitting way to start a new chapter in WA’s cricket tale.”
