In recent developments, South African pace sensation Kagiso Rabada was handed a one-match ban for using inappropriate language in the match. After dismissing a well set Ben Stokes, Rabada could not control his emotions and therefore provided Stokes with an inappropriate send off by using explicit language. Therefore, Rabada has to miss the second Test Match of the series against England.
A video of the entire scene was leaked which clearly demonstrated the words used by the pacer after he dismissed Stokes, with help of the stump mic. After England lost a flurry of wickets in the morning session of Day 1 of Lord’s Test, newly appointed captain Joe Root and Ben Stokes steadied the innings with their counter-attacking partnership. After Ben Stokes reached his half-century, the frustration on the Proteans was pretty much evident with the partnership.
However, in an attempt to pull a short ball off Rabada, Stokes top edged one to the keeper Quinton De Kock which vented out the South African pacer’s frustration as well as joy after claiming the prized wicket of the Golden Boy of England Cricket. The stump mic received the words uttered out of Rabada as “Come on, F**k off ”
As a result, Rabada is expected to miss out in the second Test match against England at Trent Bridge as he has gained 4 demerits in 24 months, thus, faces a one-match suspension along with a fine of 15 percent of his match fees. The Protea fast bowler was found guilty of breaching article 2.1.7 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Player and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batsman upon his/her dismissal during an International Match”.
Kagiso Rabada found support from various stalwarts from the cricketing community as they defended his actions claiming it falls under the domain of “heat of the moment”. Mark Boucher, Kevin Pietersen and many more condemned ICC’s move, keeping an eye on the conservation of Test Cricket.
