The series victory against India feels just like beating Australia in Ashes: Trevor Bayliss
"It is right up there with beating Australia in the Ashes," he said.
After a massive beating by 203 runs in Nottingham, the Joe Root-led England side came back to claim an emphatic win in the fourth Test and thus also managed to win the Pataudi Trophy with a Test match to go. The England top-order stuttered again and failed to negotiate the Indian seamers, but once again it was the lower order that showed a lot of resolute and got the team to a winning total in the second innings. England coach Trevor Bayliss is mighty impressed with the team’s efforts.
20-year-old Sam Curran who has been the find of the series for the visitors led the fightback for his team and his support helped Jos Buttler play a more decisive knock. Moeen Ali, playing his first match in the series also made a valuable contribution with the bat. It was the lower order’s contribution that made the difference once again.
It is a great feeling to knock off the No. 1 Test team
Trevor Bayliss who is the head coach of the England team addressed the media before the start of the final Test match at the Kennington Oval from September 7, where he mentioned that the series victory against a quality side like India is a huge achievement and it gives him as a coach the same feeling as after defeating Australia in the Ashes.
“It is right up there with beating Australia in the Ashes. Obviously, India is a very good team, the number one team, and to knock them off is a very good feeling,” said Bayliss as quoted by the Times Now.
He also applauded the efforts of the players who showed a lot of character while handling the pressure situation that daunted the England team in the fourth Test. They were in a troublesome situation after being reduced to 86/6 on the first day of the Test, after which young Sam Curran played an extraordinary knock of 78 runs to take his side towards a competitive total of 246 runs. Bayliss noted that the boys worked on their mistakes and fought back well.
“There were some difficult conditions especially on day one. We have said before, under a bit of pressure these guys have got a bit of character which is a good sign going forward,” he added.
Moeen is a very hard working cricketer
“I’m sure there will be discussions on a few things in the next couple of days. Batsmen would like to have a settled position in the order. You always find in any era or team there are one or two guys who have to be a bit flexible. Moeen has been that guy for us over the last few years. When Root asked him if he was keen to do it he jumped at it. In the right conditions, I would not put it past him.”
“He works hard at his game. In spinning conditions, he can cover that pretty well at the moment but his challenge will be on the faster wickets but we haven’t got any of those for a while,” Bayliss concluded.
