'The T20 World Cup felt a million miles away' - Eoin Morgan on his retirement decision
"I’m very happy with my decision," Morgan said.
Eoin Morgan will go down as one of the most loved and respected English players of all time, and it was evident on Tuesday when the entire cricketing world came together to shower love and praise on the former England skipper after he announced his retirement from international cricket.
Morgan retired as England’s most successful ODI captain ever with 76 wins in 126 games and a World Cup in the trophy cabinet. He was also a part of the 2010 T20 WC winning team and led his side to another final in 2016. The southpaw’s influence in the game galvanized the English side into a champion one and led it to ultimate glory in 2019 as it lifted England’s maiden ICC World Cup trophy.
The explosive batter has revealed the reasoning behind his decision to call it quits before the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia in October. He felt that it was the end of the road for him and that the T20 World Cup was too far away for him.
“It goes against everything I stand for, I just would have felt like an imposter. I’m very happy with my decision. The day it hit me, I was emotional, it was a difficult day, but since then, I’ve been very content. I’d reached the end of the road. The World Cup is in October, and the feeling that day felt a million miles away,” Morgan was quoted in an excerpt from India Today.
The Irish-born cricketer will now be joining Sky’s commentary team for men’s white-ball series this English season. He further expressed his desire to be involved in English cricket as he is preparing for an administrative position on the board. “I don’t spend a lot of time in the boardroom, so I don’t know how that would work, but I’m doing a course at the moment to allow me to sit on a board at some stage,” Morgan said.
