The time when India gave a panic attack to Lungi Ngidi

South Africa’s new pace sensation rattled through the Indian batting lineup in the second innings of the second Test to provide South Africa with an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Debutant Lungi Ngidi grabbed six wickets in the second innings and received the man of the match award for his exceptional performance at his home ground. The 20-year-old pacer single-handedly won the game for the Proteas, he also took the prized wicket of Indian skipper Virat Kohli. However SA lost the final game of the series to India.

The 6’4″ tall paceman gave India panic in the second innings but before becoming tormenter-in-chief a young Lungi Nigidi while visiting India in 2015 had a panic attack after looking at the traffic in foothills of Himalayas. According to a report in Indian Express, Lungi had a panic attack in Dehradun, when he came here to play university-level cricket in 2015.

The team manager at TuksCricket – the cricket club of the University of Pretoria’s (UP) sports department, Blanche Conradie spoke about the panic attack incident of the B.Com student Ngidi, the team’s tallest and broadest member, who loves to sleep, wanted to leave his room and go out. “We were in this bus on the hills with lots of hooting and honking around on the sinuous route with traffic jams. Lungi thought he was going to die and had a panic attack. He was screaming and going crazy, he lay on the floor of the bus because he couldn’t take it anymore,” says Conradie.

After his match-winning spell, Ngidi became the national hero but amidst all this, he will have to focus on his studies again like a normal university student.  The recent sensation now is part of the three-year course that would give him a B.Com degree in social and political science. Later this year the boy he will have to battle with his exams like the Indians had to battle with his fierce bowling. “He was to study sociology, philosophy, history and anthropology…these are difficult subjects, one needs to study for them.”
