2019 World Cup is on the horizon and some teams are trying different combinations before the mega event. Teams like India and England look in good shape ahead of the tournament but Australia are struggling, to say the least. The defending champions lost the ODI series at home against India. The five-time World Cup winners are not among the favourites this time around, and according to their coach, Justin Langer, some major changes can be expected in the World Cup squad.
The Australian team is set to tour India for five ODIs and two T20Is starting on February 24. There have been some changes in the squad for the tour, and Justin Langer has suggested that there is still time for some players to claim a spot in the team. He revealed that banned cricketers Steve Smith and David Warner will have a good chance of featuring in the squad which will further increase the competition for places.
The former left-handed batsman believes that this competition is good for the team. He claimed that the players in the squad know the importance of being on their toes because poor performances can cost them their place in the team. This healthy competition can help Australia in playing some quality cricket which will be helpful ahead of the World Cup.
Justin Langer on the competition for the places
“Whether you are on this tour or not, there is still going to be spots up for grabs. But the World Cup is going to come up sooner than you know and guys like Steve Smith and Dave Warner are obviously going to bang very hard on the door,So there is going to be some competition there, but that is good as there is going to be some guys that need to stay on their toes the entire time and keep playing great cricket every time we play,” Cricket Australia quoted Langer, as saying.
As mentioned above, the most successful team in the history of the World Cup have been struggling for some time now. Some poor performances have meant that the Australian team has slipped to the sixth position in the ICC ODI Rankings. Justin Langer did not seem concerned about this, as he said that if they can pick a strong squad of 15, the future will look after itself.
“We know there are a lot of good players and there are only 15 spots for the World Cup. If you pick the best team for each game, the future usually looks after itself,” he said.
