Jasprit Bumrah has not put a foot wrong since breaking into the international scene after a stellar stint with the Mumbai Indians in the 10th edition of the IPL. He carried his magnificent form from the cash-rich league to the Indian blues and announced himself in style. Virat Kohli and his men performed a complete whitewash over the Sri Lankans in the 5 match ODI series and Bumrah had a major role to play in it.
The Gujarat-born bowler not only ended up as the highest wicket taker of the series but also smashed a world record. His 15 wickets in the series were the highest ever by a bowler in a 5 match bilateral series. The previous best was that of Australian pacer Clint McKay, who had claimed 14 scalps in the five-match home series against Pakistan in 2010. The unorthodox bowler also took a mammoth stride forward in the ICC ODI rankings for bowlers as he jumped 27 sports to occupy the number 4th position.
The main story:
Though Bumrah has cemented his spot in the limited over formats he is yet to make his Test debut for the Indian team. His coach Kishore Trivedi believes that Bumrah can still improve his stamina and work on his variations to survive the grueling Test format.
“The selectors are definitely analysing his performance. He should be given a chance in Tests, but for that he should develop his variations. He has a lot of variety like the in-swinging and out-swinging ball, yorkers and the slower one. He should have the stamina as well to bowl a long spell. He definitely has the potential,” Trivedi told mid-day.
“I coached him when he was in Class VIII, IX and X. When he started training under me, Jasprit was very raw in his bowling, but he gradually improved after a lot of practice.” he said.
His will power is his strong point. Whenever he performed badly, he never used to get disappointed, but was determined to do better. There was nobody who could stop him from performing,” Trivedi added.
Kishore Trivedi pointed out that Burmah’s peculiar bowling action is his most deadly weapon. “Yes. Many people told him to change it, but I stopped him from doing so. This odd action is his greatest weapon. Batsmen have no clue whether the ball will come in or move out.” he said.
“I gave him this advice and he followed it. Today, he is reaping the fruits of it.” he concluded.
