'The workload can be managed in the IPL' - Sunil Gavaskar reckons Hardik Pandya should bowl for India
Sunil Gavaskar also stated that if the workload management comes at the cost of the Indian side, then it is not the right approach.
While Hardik Pandya rolled his arm over in all the 5 T20Is against England, the all-rounder has not bowled even a single delivery in the three-match ODI series thus far. And when asked why Hardik is not bowling, Indian skipper Virat Kohli stated that Hardik’s workload had to be managed.
However, former Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has a different point of view. Gavaskar opined that the balance of the side needs to be looked at, and if the player cannot fit into the current requirements of the side citing workload management, then he must not even find a spot in the playing XI.
Gavaskar further added that the workload can be managed during the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 71-year-old also said that if Pandya is playing for the Indian side as an all-rounder, then he should be ready to bowl at least three or four overs every game.
“When you talk about workload management, you’ve got to look at the balance of your team and if the balance of the team means that the workload management man does not fit into the Playing XI, he shouldn’t be playing in the XI. The workload can then be managed in the IPL for the following matches. If he plays for India, and he’s an all-rounder, he should be available to bowl three-four overs,” said Gavaskar in a chat with Star Sports.
I totally agree that Hardik Pandya maybe is not ready to bowl full quota: Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar also opined that even though Hardik Pandya might not be able to bowl 10 overs in an ODI match, he should certainly chip in with a few overs if any of the regular bowlers get pummelled. Gavaskar concluded by stating that if the workload management comes at the cost of the Indian side, then it is not the right approach.
“I totally agree that he maybe is not ready to bowl a full quota of 10 overs, but if one of the bowlers gets hammered, then you want somebody to come and fill in for those three-four overs. Hardik Pandya has to it(sic), India have to use him because this workload management this is… if it’s at the cost of the Indian team… then that is not the correct thing as far as I’m concerned,” concluded Gavaskar.
