Wriddhiman Saha, India’s Test wicketkeeper-batsman, has returned to Kolkata after a successful tour of Sri Lanka. The Indian team whitewashed Sri Lanka in their own backyard in a 3-match Test series and he was an important member of that side. Saha stated that there is a basic difference between the coaching of Ravi Shastri and Anil Kumble.
He was also a part of the side which toured the island nation in 2015. But unfortunately, he had to return to India during the second Test after sustaining an injury. This time though, he was fit and available for all the three games and was part of the historic series win.
He also spoke about the coaching styles Shastri and Kumble in an interview with xtratime correspondent. “Anil bhai (Anil Kumble) always wanted us to score big totals on board like 500 or 600 runs and demolish the opponent in between 200 runs. You have to understand, it won’t happen every time. On the other hand Shastri bhai (Ravi Shastri) always says us to play aggressively and destroy your opponent in the field. It is the only basic difference between the two,” said the 32-year-old.
He also went on to say that the coach has to be strict on players sometimes. “I don’t think so. It hasn’t happened with me. You have to be strict as a coach sometimes. Maybe a few had thought that he was strict but it is not my point of view,” the 32-year-old said.
Saha on his wicketkeeping skills
Recently in a press-conference, Shastri had said that Saha is just next to MS Dhoni in terms of keeping and also compared him to former England keeper Bob Taylor. When asked about the same, Saha said, “I have not seen Bob Taylor’s keeping. I have tried to give my best all the time. I am always ready to create a chance. I am always alert in my area.”
“I always wait for a chance from behind the wicket. Whether it is a catch or a run out.” The Bengal lad was happy when learnt that the cricket critics were pleased of his behind the wicket role, may it be in taking the call on DRS or stumpings.
Wriddhiman played his 100th first-class game during the third Test against Sri Lanka. “I am very happy after touching this feat. I didn’t even knew that I was about to play my career’s 100th first-class match. The media told me in the press-conference that I was about to touch the feat. I would be happier if I get a chance to play my 200th first-class match,” he further added.
He is the best wicketkeeper in India right now as far as 5-day cricket is concerned. His next assignment will again be the Sri Lanka but this time it will be at home.
