Recently, in a live session in Instagram with Rohit Sharma, Yuvraj Singh had pointed out that the current Indian team lacks the role models in the team. He was of the opinion that apart from Rohit and Virat Kohli, there is no one who can guide the youngsters unlike in the 2000s decade when the team comprised of so many legends. And the former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir also feels the same.
Gambhir highighted the presence of the likes of Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Sachin Tendulkar and Anil Kumble who used to not only perform for the team but were the idols for the youngsters. He also went on to say that having senior players in the team is always helpful as they assist the young players in the side when they are going through a tough time in their career.
“I agree with Yuvraj that there is a dearth of role models in the Indian team currently, like in the 2000s, we had Dravid, Kumble, Laxman, Sourav, and Sachin to guide the team. It is important to have senior players around you who can help you when you’re going through a rough patch.
“Right now, I don’t think there are enough seniors in the Indian camp, who will set aside their self-interest to help youngsters,” Gautam Gambhir said while speaking in Star Sports’ show ‘Cricket Connected’.
Yuvraj Singh had also taken a dig at the youngsters
While Yuvraj Singh had also uttered similar words, he also took a dig at the youngsters stating that the respect for the seniors among the upcoming cricketers has become less due to the social media. He also compared the team in 2011 World Cup to the current one and recalled the way the he used to look up to the seniors and learn from them.
“The difference I find between the team of ours and now is during our time seniors were very disciplined. Social media was not there so no distraction also. I just feel since social media has come, there are very less guys to look up to. That sense of respect for seniors…it has become a thin line,” Yuvraj had earlier said.
