'There is still time for that' - Rohit Sharma not thinking of Test captaincy yet, focused on WI series for now
Team India's limited-overs skipper Rohit Sharma has said that the Test captaincy is of secondary importance and the key focus is on the home limited-overs series against the West Indies and Sri Lanka
Rohit Sharma is all set to lead Team India for the very first time as the full-time ODI skipper during the first game against the West Indies at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. Under Rohit, the Indian team would be hoping to make amends in the upcoming three-match One Day series after a 0-3 whitewash in South Africa last month.
Meanwhile, India’s full-time white-ball captain has made it crystal clear that he is currently focused on the upcoming white-ball home series against the Windies and the Test captaincy is secondary at the moment. He made this statement when he was asked about his communication with the selectors on the possibility of him being the next red-ball skipper of India.
Virat Kohli relinquished Test captaincy after a series defeat against South Africa last month and it has been reported that Sharma could be appointed as his successor in the longest format.
We can forget about the Test captaincy now, says Rohit Sharma
“We can forget about the Test captaincy now. There is still time for that. Right now, the focus is on the limited-overs series against West Indies and Sri Lanka,” Rohit Sharma said while addressing the media during the press conference ahead of the first ODI.
The elegant opener was appointed as Kohli’s successor in the T20Is when the latter stepped down from the position after the conclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 in early November. The batting megastar was then shockingly axed as the One Day Internationals skipper by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in December prior to their departure to South Africa and Rohit was named the captain.
During Rohit’s first stint as the Indian team’s full-time T20I skipper, they had whitewashed New Zealand in the three-match home series in November and he would be confident to get his ODI captaincy career to a winning start against the Caribbeans.
Sharma was unavailable for the South Africa series due to an injury and his white-ball deputy KL Rahul was the stand-in captain of India in the One Day series where they failed to register even a single win.
