‘There should be no real excuse’ – Sunil Gavaskar opines on Jasprit Bumrah’s concerns regarding bio-bubble fatigue

Former batter Sunil Gavaskar said that fatigue due to the hassles surrounding the bio-secure bubbles shouldn’t be used an excuse for India’s poor performance in the T20 World Cup 2021. Earlier, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah said that the players have found it challenging to keep themselves going amidst the quarantining and bio-bubbles during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pacer lauded the BCCI for trying to make things easier for the cricketers, but also reckoned that mental fatigue has crept in during the tumultuous times. However, the 72-year-old Gavaskar said that regardless of the situation, the players should put their best foot forward since it’s a privilege to represent a nation at the international level.

“Well look, when you are playing for India, everything has got to recede to the background. It’s as simple as that. It’s an unbelievable privilege and a huge honour to be playing for and representing your country. There are millions who you know, want to get the India cap, the India colors,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying in Sports Today.

“Nobody should be saying that this [bubble fatigue] is there. There should be no real excuse. You should go out there and give it your best. It’s as simple as that,” he stated.

India have made a dismal start to their campaign in the World Cup. To start with, they lost to Pakistan by 10 wickets in Dubai. Thereafter, New Zealand defeated them by eight wickets at the same venue. Gavaskar had India’s back, saying that Virat Kohli and Co. have been exceptional over the years.

“And that’s all the Indian fans are expecting. We all know that you can’t win every game. This is a sport; you are going to lose. Even the greatest of players in individual sports, even the greatest of teams lose. And this is a great team, make no mistake. The way they have played over the years, it’s a top team,” Gavaskar added.

India’s third game in the Super 12 is against Mohammad Nabi’s Afghanistan on Wednesday, November 3 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The Men in Blue are presently placed fifth in Group 2 with a net run rate of -3.562.
