Former South African batsman Hashim Amla has admitted that the Proteas were clueless to the questions posed by India during their recent series whitewash. The Proteas skipper Faf du Plessis also went on to say that the series result has left ‘mental scars’ on the new players.
Further, Faf also was opinionated and slammed the South African cricket board for ‘not planning’ to fill the gaps left by some of the former starlets. According to the skipper, the board has created a “gap between domestic cricket and international cricket.”
Hashim Amla, similarly on the SuperSport studios agreed that the visitors had no idea on how to tackle Virat Kohli’s men at their backyard. He said, ‘They’ve just dominated us and unfortunately we haven’t had answers to their probing questions, consistent questions.’

Hashim Amla retired just before the series
Hashim Amla looked optimistic about the group of guys and said this experience would help them improve their performance in the future. After having retired at the age of 36, he has left a huge void to fill as addressed by Faf in the post-match press conference. Amla retired a few days before the series began and clearly, South Africa missed him.
“If you look back three or four years and if someone had the vision of saying, in three or four years’ time there will be a lot of inexperienced guys. A lot of 34, 35, 36-year olds could possibly retire. So what do you do to make sure you get yourself ready for when that time comes?” Du Plessis said in the post-match press conference.
South Africa came into the series in a slightly positive manner after a total squad overhaul. The young guns were all hay and merry before the testing storm put out by the Indian team. After suffering a narrow defeat in the first Test, the Proteas could not bounce back in the second and third as they slumped to successive Test defeats.
While Faf’s team suffered a whitewash, the series would have pointed at some of the players that they would be looking at in the future. Kagiso Rabada continued to shine on and off for the Proteas, while Keshav Maharaj and Senuran Muthuswamy emerged as the shining light in the rather gloomy series.
The Proteas would be hopeful of the squad to perform in familiar conditions as they face the tough English side in the month of December in what could a mirror of South Africa’s Test future. But how will they fill the void created by Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers?
