Things mentally weren't right with in PSL, I was in weird place: Jason Roy

England opener Jason Roy opened up on his mental state during the PSL 2022 edition and felt that it was a much-needed break for him to spend time with his family. Roy had a splendid outing for the Quetta Gladiators at the top of the order where he notched up 303 runs in six innings at an average of 50.50. He scored one century and two half-centuries at a strike rate of 170.22 and looked in excellent touch with the bat.

However, Roy did not take part in the IPL 2022 despite being picked up by the Gujarat Titans in the mega auction and opted out ahead of the start of the season. Since his return, Roy has scored 219 runs in seven games in the T20 Blast for Surrey at an average of 31.28. He also returned to the international setup for the three-match ODI series against the Netherlands and scored a 60-ball 73 in the second ODI.

Roy felt that he wasn’t in a good frame of mind during his PSL 2022 stint despite stacking up a lot of runs at the top and noted how he could not enjoy his success during the time. He revealed about enjoying staying at the home for two months after a tight two-year schedule and felt the need for a break to spend valuable time with his family and his child.

“Things mentally weren’t right with me at the PSL. I was in a weird place because I was playing good cricket but I wasn’t enjoying myself, I wasn’t happy and it was just a dark time. It was just a good two months to come home and live a normal life for a bit after a tough couple of years. (There were) a lot of months away. Over 50 days of hotel quarantine the year before and then having a child in January and having to spend time away from him was just a bit too much,” Roy told Sky Sports.

He added about missing the IPL to get back his body and mind in rhythm and was happy to be back playing the game after the break.

“I missed the IPL to spend some time at home and it has refreshed my mind and body, and I recognised where I was at with a lot of things. So, it is nice to be here now and I’m chomping at the bit to put the badge back on. It’s the same for Surrey. I’ve loved every minute of that. It’s a nice feeling to be in love with the game again,” he added.
