International cricket is all set to return to Thiruvananthapuram after 29 long years with the much-touted India versus New Zealand clash on November 7. Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) Secretary, Jayesh George confirmed the event and expressed his confidence of being able to host a whopping 45,000 crowd in the new Greenfield Stadium. The cricketing fans in Kerala have been in a tizzy ever since the news of the state hosting an international match was announced.

Interestingly, the last match held in the city was even before the current 29-year olds were born. It was on January 25, 1988, at the University Stadium where a strong West Indies side, led by Sir Vivian Richards played the last of the 7 ODI series against India. The home team captained by current head coach, Ravi Shastri had lost the match by 9 wickets.

International cricket returns to Kerala

“International cricket is returning to the city after almost three decades. Hence it’s understandable excitement is mounting among the young and old. In the coming week, the tickets will be available both online and through the Federal Bank.” He further added, “We are planning to promote this match in a big way and will rope in Malayalam superstar Mohanlal. The tickets cost Rs 700, Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000. Five thousand tickets at the upper tier would be kept aside for students who will get a 50 per cent discount,” George was quoted as saying by IANS.

As expected, the state cricket authority, as well as the fans, are excited about the prospect of the regal sports paving it’s way back to the city. Reportedly, both the teams will arrive at Thiruvananthapuram on November 5 and will be staying at the Leela Kovalam luxury hotel, overlooking the Arabian Sea which is famed for its breathtaking scenic beauty. Notably, the Greenfield Stadium has hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2015 National Games.
