This is best squad Australia has ever had, it's their best chance to win T20 WC: Brett Lee
The former Aussie pacer also praised the standards of the IPL, which has produced quality players.
Despite the struggles of the men’s team in the recent T20Is, former Australian pacer Brett Lee believes that the team can win the upcoming men’s T20 World Cup 2021 in the UAE and Oman. The former fast-bowler feels that the Australia team has a good chance of winning the tournament because they have got a good squad in. However, he also believes that the Indian team is the favourites to win this tournament.
Despite winning the 50-overs World Cup five times, the Australian men’s team has not been quite successful in the 20 overs format. Their run as the runners-up in the 2010 T20 World Cup edition remains their best to date. In the 2016 edition, they didn’t even make it to the semi-finals. However, they have some solid stars for this edition.
Captain Aaron Finch, his opening partner David Warner, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Marsh, on paper, make a brilliant team. Lee believes this is one of the best teams they have had for a T20 World Cup. “I reckon this is probably one of the best squads that we’ve had,” Lee told foxsports.com.au.
India definitely will be in the final: Brett Lee
Speaking further he called England a threat while also stating why India remains his choice for a favourite to win this trophy. “England, they’re always a big threat because of the squad they’ve got and the experience they have. But, for me, India is my favourite. You think about India dominating all formats but also because of the Indian Premier League, the young guys coming through, they’ve got some really good pace now as well and their top order can be unstoppable,” Lee said.
Lee also said that he will support the Aussies as he is a very patriotic person. “India would definitely be one of the top picks and could definitely win this thing. I’m very patriotic, I want Australia to win and I think they can, but India definitely will be in the final and I think Australia has their best chance,” Lee added.
Australia will open their campaign on October 23 against South Africa in Abu Dhabi. They are grouped with England, West Indies, South Africa and two other teams who will join from the qualifying round.
