Bangladesh’s Sabbir Rahman is one of those stories where the player promises a lot, in his case not just with his talent but words as well. Saturday will determine Sabbir’s as the 26-year-old appears before the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) disciplinary committee for a hearing. He is subject to the enquiry following his disgraceful behaviour on social media where he reportedly abused a fan after the Bangladesh vs Windies 2nd ODI.
The national selectors on August 30 announced the 15-man squad for the Asia Cup 2018 and Sabbir didn’t find his name in the ODI team for the first time since making his debut back in 2014. BCB president Nazmul Hassan clarified that the cricketer will get a chance to present his part of the story and only after hearing him will the disciplinary committee make a decision. The committee has also called Nasir Hossain and Mosaddek Hossain for a hearing on their respective matters.
Out of Asia Cup due to the issues
“The disciplinary committee will hold Sabbir’s hearing after which we will reach a decision,” Hassan was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. “He is not in the ODI squad, which could also be because of the hearing’s influence. One has to be given a chance to defend himself. We will take an appropriate action.”
He mentioned that those who are repeat offenders need to be served a harsher punishment and it can be to the extent of being ousted from the team.
“When we see our punishment has no impact on a cricketer, we have to give him more stringent punishments. We also have to be fair in our judgment. If it [the allegation] is proved, however, we have to take a final decision which, for me, is being ousted from the national team,” Nazmul said.
As a short term measure the BCB is contemplating ban on social media during tours. But since the issue has been a persistent one, the board is also thinking of hiring a psychologist to help the players get over it.
“The players have to follow the guidelines but, at the end of the day, the players have to be good themselves. We cannot force it on them,” he stated.
