Three women cricketers feature in Wisden's Cricketers of the Year

Women’s cricket has garnered a tremendous level of popularity, especially after the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup in England. The players dished out some jaw-dropping performances by the participating nations. Recently, they have rightly been rewarded, as some of them have found a place in the Wisden’s Cricket Almanack, which is one of the most recognized sports journals in the world.

The three cricketers from England’s World Cup-winning squad has been included in the list of Cricketers of the Year award- Heather Knight, the English skipper, Natalie Sciver, the all-rounder, and Anya Shrubsole, the bowler who demolished India with a six-wicket haul at the Lords Cricket Ground in London.  Meanwhile, Lawrence Booth, the editor of the Almanack has heaped praises on the trio for their contributions.

“When Heather Knight lifted the World Cup at Lord’s in late July, it was the culmination of a personal tour de force that helped change women’s cricket forever. Not only had she captained England with aplomb throughout the tournament, but her 364 runs at an average of 45 – including a century against Pakistan – were central to their success.” Booth mentioned.

Natalie Sciver racked 369 runs in nine matches at a stupendous average of 46.12 with a couple of centuries against Pakistan and New Zealand. “No stroke in 2017 was more memorable than Nat Sciver’s deliberate deflection between her legs, instantly christened the ‘Natmeg’. But she was more than a one-trick pony” an elated Booth was quoted by the ICC.

“The World Cup was slipping away from England when Anya Shrubsole embarked on a trophy-winning spell of five for 11. She finished with figures of six for 46, the best in a World Cup final, and the status of a national hero. That followed her winning hit in the semi-final against South Africa, which England won by two wickets in the last over.” she added while hailing Shrubsole’s match-winning partnership.

Meanwhile, the Indians also had a fair amount to cheer as Mithali Raj and Virat Kohli became the Wisden’s Leading Cricketer in the World for women and men’s category respectively. Raj became the leading run-scorer in women’s ODIs, surpassing England’s Charlotte Edwards. On the other hand, Virat Kohli has notched runs at a haemorrhaging rate over the last one year.
