After India and New Zealand shared honours on the second day of the World Test Championship final, the latter roared in early on the third morning, with Kyle Jamieson rapping Indian skipper Virat Kohli on the pads and then sending Rishabh Pant back soon.

India resumed 146/3 after a delayed start on a damp morning with Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane in the middle. It took merely three overs for Jamieson to trap Kohli lbw, who was yet to add anything to his overnight tally of 44. Nasser Hussain, on-air, informed that only seven of Jamieson’s deliveries in the fixture would have hit the stumps, and the seventh one had Kohli walking back after burning a review.

With him gone, Indians had their eyes transfixed on the talisman Rishabh Pant, who restricted his instincts, taking 20 balls to get off the mark. Pant opened his account with not the most convincing connection of the bat as he pushed Jamieson towards the midwicket fence for a four, but it was his first runs nonetheless.

His outing turned out to be a rather transient one, though, as Jamieson enticed him on the immediately following ball for a drive. Rishabh Pant obliged by throwing his bat hard at the ball with his foot planted, nicking it healthily in the process to the second slip to walk back with merely four runs in the all-important clash, attracting plenty of criticism from Twitterverse.

Notably, the southpaw has had a stellar run in the World Test Championship cycle, and if not for his indescribably crucial contributions during India’s tour Down Under and later against England at home, the team might never have made into the finals. The young batter, however, invited criticism on this occasion for not putting enough price on his wicket, something he has been guilty of quite often in his short Test career thus far.

Given that he was early into his innings, there was plenty of movement both off the surface and in the air, and he had walked inside after the loss of a crucial wicket, it would have made sense to continue being watchful, which he was for the most part of his outing in the middle. But he let the bowler have the better off him, losing his patience at perhaps the worst juncture to leave India on thin ice after a steady performance on the previous day.
