Nurtured by the Mumbai Indians franchise in Indian Premier League, Tilak Varma has become a household name after his spectacular performances for India in T20Is.
In a short span of time, Tilak has made spectators and cricket fanatics take notice of him. He is the perfect blend of aggressive and defensive approach and someone who knows how to bat according the conditions. The southpaw has certainly cemented his spot in the Indian T20I setup and he has just started.
Speaking of his performances, he has played 22 T20Is, scoring 707 runs at an impressive average of 58.91, which includes two tons and three half-centuries. Playing his only third T20I game, the young batter smashed his maiden century, remaining unbeaten on 120 against South Africa in November 2024. In the subsequent game, he came up with another three-figure score, smashing 107* and proving is consistency.
Tilak’s father, Namboori Nagaraju, is the driving force behind the young cricketer’s journey. Nagaraju worked as an electrician. Despite the underprivileged background, Nagaraju sensed the potential in young Tilak and enrolled him to Legala Sports Academy for training. Unable to cover his training expenses, further assistance came at the end of Tilak’s coach, Salam Bayash.
Gayatri Devi, a homemaker, described that her son was an ardent cricket lover since childhood and he expressed the same through his actions. She added that whenever the young kid got some time off the school, he used to indulge himself in playing cricket.
Tilak has an elder brother named Tarun Varma.
