Since 2008, the Indian Premier League has been a platform for youngsters to showcase their talent. One of the youngsters from Hyderabad, Tilak Varma has been a consistent run-scorer in the domestic circuit. In the 2022 mega auction, he was snapped up by Mumbai Indians (MI), which has certainly been career-defining for him. The southpaw is the leading run-scorer for the team in the ongoing edition with 328 runs in 10 innings at an average of 41.00.
In the latest interaction, the former Indian cricketer Deep Dasgupta opened up on the form of Varma and the openers of the MI team. Dasgupta reckoned that the 19-year-old has shown tremendous potential to score runs in his debut season, and has been impressive with his strike rates as well. He further added that it’s quite hard for any player to be consistent for a side that has been losing almost all its matches.
“It’s very difficult to be that consistent, and it says a lot about him and his temperament. Barring a single fixture against RCB, he has contributed in every game. His strike rates have been terrific in most matches. Tilak certainly has the talent and temperament to play for a winning team,” said Dasgupta on Sky247.net presents ‘Not Just Cricket’ Show on CricTracker.
“With a team like MI, the bare minimum is the qualification to the playoffs, and with the team not performing well, it has been a bad mindset in the team. But, he has been consistent in the first year itself, and has cemented his place in the team, which is terrific,” he added.
There has been a lack of fluency in Ishan Kishan’s batting, said Deep Dasgupta
Dasgupta thinks the top-order batter of MI, Ishan Kishan is going through a rough patch and has never looked comfortable in the crease, and has lacked fluency as compared to the last few editions. He added that captain Rohit Sharma has to convert starts and bat most of the overs for the betterment of the team. Meanwhile, Kishan and Rohit contributed 40+ runs each and stitched a quickfire stand of 74 against Gujarat Titans (GT).
“He is going through a rough patch, as even his short innings of 10-15 runs have lacked fluency. On the other hand, Rohit never looks out of form, but he has not been able to convert his starts into a big one,” added Dasgupta.
