Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan had a relatively late entry in Indian cricket. He had been in contention for a spot in the 2000s but got his debut in 2010. Dhawan has done it on a few occasions for India but the only problem with him has been consistency. He has the typical off side shots of a left-hander and aggression as his attributes. Dhawan scored his 3000th run during his centurion knock against Australia in Canberra and with that became among the fastest to get there.

3. Joe Root – 72 innings:

England’s no.3 batsman, Joe Root is one of the dependable players for Brits. Root made his ODI debut for England in 2013 against India. The 25-year-old English batsman led his team to victory in many occasions. Root reached the 3000-run landmark in just 72 innings against Pakistan at Leeds, Headingley. With this feat, Root became the 3rd joint fastest to reach the milestone alongside Gary Kirsten, Shikhar Dhawan and Gordon Greenidge.

3. Gary Kirsten – 72 innings

Known as someone with a great cricketing brain Gary Kirsten is in the 4th place in the list having reached 3000 ODI runs in just 72 matches, the 2nd fastest South African to reach the milestone. Gary was never supremely talented but his iron like temperament and great diligence enabled him to succeed in his endeavours. He averages over 40 in both the formats of the game. Gary Kirsten after retirement from professional cricket has made a name for himself as a good coach capable of bringing the best out of any side. He was the coach of the 2011 world cup winning Indian side and is currently the coach of the successful South African team.

3. Gordon Greenidge – 72 innings

Gordon Greenidge is a rare blend of both aggressive and defensive stroke play. He learned the art of stonewalling tactics in his early days in the pitches of England and has ever since been successful in both the ODIs and test formats as well. He is the third fastest player ever to reach 3000 runs in ODIs. Never in the game has there been a more withering and dismissive square-cut, nor a more willing and able hooker and puller, but he drove mightily too on both sides of the wicket.
