South African opener Hashim Amla is chasing Virat Kohli record for record as he earlier broke his record for the fastest batsman to 6000 ODI runs and now overhauled him to the 7000-run mark. Amla has been a revelation for the Proteas up the order and has delivered from them across formats.

A technically sound player who makes beautiful use of his hands scored his 7000th ODI run against England in the last ODI of the 3-match series at Lord&#8217;s. He needed just 150 innings to breach past the mark while Kohli who held the record earlier took 11 more. The 7000-run mark has been a great milestone for any batsman in the format as not many have got there, but being the fastest to that, is considered as a majestic way of achieving the feat. Here we look at the top ten fastest (by innings) batsmen to reach 7000 runs in ODIs.</p>

<p>Probably one the greatest wicketkeeper batsmen who has drawn consistent comparisons with the legendary Adam Gilchrist, MS Dhoni is regarded as the most popular figures in Indian cricket after Sachin Tendulkar. Hailing from Ranchi, he has an amazing batting style and a style of captaincy that scales the highs and lows of both conservatism and unorthodoxy. MS Dhoni completed 7000 against Pakistan in Chennai during 2012. He did achieve it in just 189 innings which is laudable considering the position he bats at.</p>

<p>Gayle is considered as one of the most destructive openers in modern day cricket as well as a legendary figure in West Indies. He has the capability to decimate any bowler when he is in his flow. Perhaps one of the biggest pinch hitters of all time Chris Gayle has dominated various leagues as well and in such a menacing way, that not many have done. He completed 7000 runs in ODIs against New Zealand at Napier and equalled Tendulkar in doing so in 189 innings. </p>

<p>No amount of words would be enough to describe a number of laurels he has brought to cricket. Arguably the greatest batsman in the cricketing history, Sachin Tendulkar was regarded a force to reckon with during his playing days. He has countless records in international cricket and some are well beyond reach. Tendulkar completed 7000 runs against Sri Lanka and was the second fastest to do so in 1998 next to Haynes. He recorded this achievement in 189 innings.</p>

<p>The modern cricketer is regarded as the greatest all-rounder to have ever played the game. Kallis was a thrilling batsman to watch who had at his disposal both a rock-solid technique and a no-nonsense batsman. Kallis is also the regarded as the best ever batsman to have played for South Africa. He achieved the feat of scoring 7000 runs in ODIs during 2004 against Sri Lanka. He did this in just 188 innings, making him among the fastest to do so.</p>

<h3><strong>6. Desmond Haynes – 187 innings:</strong></h3>

<p>Desmond Haynes formed a formidable partnership with Gordon Greenidge for the West Indies cricket team in Test cricket during their golden era in the 1980s. He was also the Wisden Cricketer of the year in 1991. Haynes reached 7000 runs in just 187 innings which was the best till Lara broke his 10-year old record. He achieved this record against India in Adelaide.</p>

<p>Hardly has any player been so fluent in scoring massive scores and at such enthralling pace as Brian Lara. Perhaps one of the greatest batsmen in cricketing history and an all-time legend for the West Indies, Lara inspired his team to achieve great things. He went on to complete 7000 runs in One Day Internationals against South Africa in 2001. He too held the fastest to be there record in just 183 innings only to be bettered by Ganguly.</p>

<p>Often described as the God on the off-side, nobody can argue about Sourav Ganguly being one of the greatest ODI batsmen of all time. He was a batsman who had grace with surgical precision in his strokeplay and could score runs at a brisk pace. Ganguly completed 7000 runs in ODIs against Kenya in 2001 in just 174 innings. This was a world record until AB de Villiers did it in eight innings lesser than Ganguly.</p>

<p>There is undoubtedly no bigger cricketer in the world than AB de Villiers at the moment. A batsman with the ability to hit some breathtaking shots and entertain the crowds in a majestic fashion, de Villiers has been acclaimed worldwide for his batting style. He completed 7000 ODI runs as he achieved this feat against Australia in Perth in 2015. AB became the fastest ever to do so in just 166 innings only to be broken by Kohli a year later.</p>

<p>Currently regarded as one of the top batsmen and the most consistent cricketers in the world, Virat Kohli has time and again proved his worth with the bat. He holds a great prize for his wicket and has achieved lots of success at a young age.</p>
<p>After being the fastest to reach 5000 and 6000 runs, Kohli during his innings against Australia at the MCG, he became the fastest to reach 7000 runs in ODIs. Now the Test captain as well, Virat Kohli achieved this feat in just 161 innings thus breaking ABD&#8217;s record in the process.</p>

<p>South African opener Hashim Amla is chasing Virat Kohli record for record as he earlier broke his record for the fastest batsman to 6000 ODI runs and now overhauled him to the 7000-run mark. Amla has been a revelation for the Proteas up the order and has delivered from them across formats.</p>
<p>A technically sound player who makes beautiful use of his hands scored his 7000th ODI run against England in the last ODI of the 3-match series at Lord&#8217;s. He needed just 150 innings to breach past the mark while Kohli who held the record earlier took 11 more. Amla is 34 and is only getting better by the year which suggests he still has a lot of cricket left in him.</p>
