Sachin Tendulkar top scored in the 1996 Wills World cup with 523 runs and became the first batsman to score 500 runs in a single World cup. He averaged 85.87 in the series and scored his runs with a strike rate of almost 86 runs per 100 balls.

Sachin hit 2 centuries, 137 against Sri Lanka in Delhi in a losing cause and 127 against Kenya. He also scored a valiant 90 against Australia and 65 against Sri Lanka in the ill-fated semi-final at Eden Gardens. This was the first time Sachin had top scored in a World cup, he would go on to better his record in the 2003 edition.
