Former Sri Lankan captain and the mainstay of their batting, Mahela Jayawardene retired from Test cricket just before the ICC World Cup 2015 with 34 centuries in 149 Tests with 11,814 runs with the highest score of 374 against South Africa in 2006. Jayawardene also captained Sri Lanka from 2006-2013 in 38 Test matches. His record of most first-class centuries (51) was broken by compatriot Kumar Sangakkara.<strong> </strong>

Brian Lara retired from Test cricket in 2006 after playing 131 matches and scoring the then record 11,953 runs, breaking the record of Allan Border at the time. He also hit the then joint second 34 centuries in Test cricket with the world record score of 400* as his best score. In a career spanning 16 years he averaged 52.88 and broke the record for the highest individual score 2 times in his career, the only man to do so ever in Test cricket.

The original little master Sunil Gavaskar scored 34 centuries in a career spanning 16 years and 125 Test matches. He broke the long standing record of 29 centuries held by Sir Don Bradman when he scored his 30<sup>th</sup> Test century against West Indies at the M.A. Chidambaram stadium in Madras (now Chennai). He scored 236*, which is also his highest Test score in 1983. His record stood for 22 years until another little master broke it in 2005.

Rahul ‘The Wall’ Dravid played 164 Test matches for India which is the second most in Tests for India and scored 36 centuries. He scored and astonishing 13,288 runs at an average of 52.31. He is the second most successful batsman in Tests for India behind Sachin Tendulkar. He scored his highest score of 270 against Pakistan at Rawalpindi Stadium in 2004.

Kallis averaged an astonishing 55.37 and has the highest scored of 224 against Sri Lanka in 2012 at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town. He also picked up 292 wickets in Tests and 200 catches.

The record for highest number of centuries in Tests belongs to the one and only Sachin Tendulkar of India, who has 51 centuries in 200 matches. He scored 15,291 runs at an average of 53.78 and the highest score of 248* against Bangladesh.

Tendulkar holds almost every batting record in Test and ODI cricket. He broke Sunil Gavaskar’s record for 34 centuries in 2005 when he scored his 35<sup>th</sup> century against Sri Lanka in Delhi. He is the first and only player to play 200 Test matches, which he did in Mumbai, also his last Test. No matter how popular One Day Internationals or T20 format has become, Test cricket will still have its lovers as it is the original and toughest display of skills of players.</p>
<p>For batsmen, it becomes even tougher with no restrictions over the number of overs to be bowled by the bowlers and also inclement towards bowler friendly pitches as seen in the recently concluded India vs South Africa series which had just 2 centuries scored by the same batsman and that too in the last Test.</p>

<p>Younis Khan has been Pakistan’s best batsman in recent times along with Misbah-ul-Haq and that has been seen in his numbers. He had a brilliant Tests series against England recently in the UAE, where he broke many records related to Pakistani batting. He became the highest Test run scorer for Pakistan in Tests, surpassing Javed Miandad and Inzamam-ul-Haq. He also broke Miandad’s record of most number of centuries and now has 33 centuries, the most by any Pakistani in Test cricket.</p>

<p>Aussie captain Steve Waugh retired in 2004 with an exemplary record in both Tests and ODIs for Australia. He won the ICC World Cup twice, once as a player in 1987 and again in 1999 as a captain. In Tests, he became the second Australian to reach 10,000 Test runs and also ended up with 32 centuries in 168 matches. <strong> </strong></p>

<p>Former Sri Lankan captain and the mainstay of their batting, Mahela Jayawardene retired from Test cricket just before the ICC World Cup 2015 with 34 centuries in 149 Tests with 11,814 runs with the highest score of 374 against South Africa in 2006. Jayawardene also captained Sri Lanka from 2006-2013 in 38 Test matches. His record of most first-class centuries (51) was broken by compatriot Kumar Sangakkara.<strong> </strong></p>

<p>Brian Lara retired from Test cricket in 2006 after playing 131 matches and scoring the then record 11,953 runs, breaking the record of Allan Border at the time. He also hit the then joint second 34 centuries in Test cricket with the world record score of 400* as his best score. In a career spanning 16 years he averaged 52.88 and broke the record for the highest individual score 2 times in his career, the only man to do so ever in Test cricket.</p>

<h4><strong>6. Sunil Gavaskar – 34 centuries:</strong></h4>

<p>The original little master Sunil Gavaskar scored 34 centuries in a career spanning 16 years and 125 Test matches. He broke the long standing record of 29 centuries held by Sir Don Bradman when he scored his 30<sup>th</sup> Test century against West Indies at the M.A. Chidambaram stadium in Madras (now Chennai). He scored 236*, which is also his highest Test score in 1983. His record stood for 22 years until another little master broke it in 2005.</p>

<h4><strong>5. Rahul Dravid – 36 centuries:<br>

<p>Rahul ‘The Wall’ Dravid played 164 Test matches for India which is the second most in Tests for India and scored 36 centuries. He scored and astonishing 13,288 runs at an average of 52.31. He is the second most successful batsman in Tests for India behind Sachin Tendulkar. He scored his highest score of 270 against Pakistan at Rawalpindi Stadium in 2004.</p>

<p>The most recently retired batsman from Test cricket, Kumar Sangakkara played his last Test in 2015 against India. He ended up with 12,400 runs in 134 Tests with an average of 57.40 and the highest score of 319 against Bangladesh. He hit 38 centuries in 233 innings and is only the second batsman in Test history to score a triple hundred and a hundred in the same Test, a feat he accomplished against Bangladesh in 2014 when he scored 319 and 105 in two innings of the Test match.</p>

<p>Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting retired in 2012 with 41 Test centuries in 287 innings of 168 Test matches. He scored 13,378 runs with a highest Test score of 257 and he stands in the second place in the most runs scored in Test cricket behind Sachin Tendulkar. 19 of his centuries came as Australian Test captain in 77 Test matches from 2004-2010.</p>

<p>The greatest modern all-rounder, Jacques Kallis retired in 2013 with 13,289 runs in 166 Tests and 45 centuries. He is the second highest century maker in Tests behind Sachin Tendulkar. Kallis averaged an astonishing 55.37 and has the highest scored of 224 against Sri Lanka in 2012 at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town. He also picked up 292 wickets in Tests and 200 catches.</p>

<p>The record for highest number of centuries in Tests belongs to the one and only Sachin Tendulkar of India, who has 51 centuries in 200 matches. He scored 15,291 runs at an average of 53.78 and the highest score of 248* against Bangladesh.</p>
<p>Tendulkar holds almost every batting record in Test and ODI cricket. He broke Sunil Gavaskar’s record for 34 centuries in 2005 when he scored his 35<sup>th</sup> century against Sri Lanka in Delhi. He is the first and only player to play 200 Test matches, which he did in Mumbai, also his last Test. He scored a total of 100 centuries in international cricket, with 49 centuries in ODIs to go with 51 in Test cricket.</p>
