The elegant left-hander was one of England’s finest ever batsmen. He played 42 Ashes Tests and scored 3269 runs at an average of 44.78. This included 9 hundreds and 12 fifties. This also featured his career best of 215 at Manchester in August 1985. He followed this match-winning effort with a 157 in the 6th and final Test at the Oval; it was a brilliant knock that sealed the series 3-1 for England. Gower was at the peak of his powers during the series scoring a staggering 732 runs at an average of 81.33.
