The eventual runners-up of the 1979 World Cup and hosts England faced Canada in Manchester in what turned out to be an easy win for the English side. Batting first the Canadian team was bowled out for 45 in 40.3 overs. The home side achieved the desired result with 8 wickets and 277 balls remaining. This was the second-ever edition of the marquee event in ODI cricket.
