Australia found one of the greatest captains in the form of Ricky Ponting. It was during Ponting’s captaincy that Australia won two successive World Cups (in 2003 and 2007). The had a strong hold in the Test rankings at the top spot for a period of 74 months, which in itself is a record.

The only weak point, as one might assess, was his captaincy in the T20s where he could not get a major trophy to his name. Ponting led Australia in 77 Tests and won 48 of them and lost just 16. He was at the helm in 230 ODIs before calling it quits in 2011. He won 165 ODIs and lost just 51 with an impressive win percentage of 76.14.

In the cumulative 324 matches that he led Australia in, he tasted victory on 220 occasions, and lost in 77 matches. His captaincy spanned from 2002 to 2012.
