Top 10 Captains with most sixes in international cricket

Former Australian skipper Ian Chappell began playing the hook shot during an early part of his career. While the hook shot shielded Chappell from the blistering pace of Michael Holding, Joel Garner and Andy Roberts, it gave him a psychological edge. A modern day cricketer receives a similar psychological edge when he smashes the ball into the crowd. Captaincy comes with its share of responsibilities but some of the captains have enjoyed batting with that pressure like never before and unleashed themselves on the opposition bowlers. That said, here is a list of captains with the most sixes in international cricket. 10. Hansie Cronje – 107 sixes: Hansie Cronje, South Africa. (Photo by Bob Thomas/Getty Images) The former South African skipper Hansie Cronje was perhaps the first batsman who laid down the definition of aggressive batting. He liked to dominate the bowlers and was an able enough batsman to do so. Despite calling time on his cricketing career early on, Cronje slammed 107 sixes in just 191 innings in a career spanning 6 years. But over the years, the 42-year old Pakistani talisman has grown the reputation of smashing sixes when the team requires it the most. Misbah has struck the most number of sixes as a captain in international cricket for his country with 116 in 143 matches overall. He also has struck 578 boundaries. 8. AB de Villiers – 120 sixes: South Africa’s AB de Villiers. In the early 1980s, when the fast bowers dominated the game, Dennis Lillie exclaimed, “A moving target is much harder to hit.” Thus far, this fact remains true when the name AB de Villiers is brought up. Brian Lara – 123 sixes: Brian Lara. (Photo Source: Getty Images) It is said that Brian Lara starts performing with the bat only when he puts on the all-white clothing for the West Indies. A record-breaking batsman and perhaps the best in his era, Lara has set the record for the highest individual score in Test cricket with an unbeaten 400. The former West Indies skipper has 123 international sixes to his name. 6. Vivian Richards – 125+ sixes: Viv Richards. (© Getty Images) The master blaster Sir Vivian Richards held the record for the better part of 2 decades. Although it is disputed, Richards has hit a mammoth 125 sixes. Having skippered the Windies in the late 1980s, Sir Viv struck terror into opposition bowlers with his free flowing technique. (+ indicates he has more sixes than mentioned since it is as per the number recorded by statisticians which tends to vary.) 5. Sourav Ganguly – 130 sixes: Former Indian batsman Sourav Ganguly . Of the 130 sixes Sourav Ganguly hit, a majority of the sixes have been on the off side which is certainly no surprise. The most memorable six came against Kenya in the semi-final of the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup where he smashed Martin Suji over the midwicket fence en route to his century. The Jamaican batsman who boasts of massive forearms, sixes sail off his bat as he effortlessly looks on. For someone who hits sixes the way he does, it’s quite a surprise that Gayle has hit 134 sixes but that has got a lot to do with his captaincy career which wasn’t really the highlight of his career. 3. Brendon McCullum – 170 sixes: Brendon McCullum of New Zealand. His aggressive approach to batting and captaincy along with his urge to smash each and every ball out of the park makes his name a regulation mention in any list talking about the big shots. McCullum loved to stamp his authority over the bowlers and what better way than smashing them around. 2. Ricky Ponting – 171 sixes: Ricky Ponting. Ricky Ponting’s ability to seamlessly change gears during the course of the innings made him one of the greatest batsmen to have played the game. Ponting smashed 171 sixes in an illustrious captaincy career spanning from 2002 to 2012, leading his team in 324 international matches. 1. MS Dhoni – 210 sixes: MS Dhoni of India bats during ICC World Twenty20 India 2016. (Photo by Pal Pillai/IDI via Getty Images) Indian skipper MS Dhoni leads the list with most sixes – 210 in his captaincy career spanning 330 international matches. The 200th six of his career came against Sri Lanka when Rangana Herath was hoisted over the long off boundary. Although Dhoni is unable to clear the boundary as he did in his younger days, he is an important figure in the Indian side and still leads the team with his own monkish calmness and composure.
