Sanath Jayasuriya had a special affection towards India which resulted in India’s most humiliating defeat. India met Sri Lanka in the final of Coca Cola Champions Trophy in 2000-01 and Sri Lanka batted first. Sri Lanka scored 299/5 with Jayasuriya scoring 189 off 161 balls with 21 fours and 4 fours. Jayasuriya lost the chance to break the then world record of 194, but it was enough for Sri Lanka to score 299. India could only manage to score 54 runs with Chaminda Vaas taking 5/14 and Muralidharan taking 3/6. Sri Lanka won the match and the trophy by 245 runs.
