10. Jacques Rudolph & Boeta Dippenaar – 429* v Bangladesh:
Yet again, it was Bangladesh that was at the receiving end. In 2003, in the 3rd Test match, in reply to Bangladesh’s 173, South Africa lost Smith early for just 16 runs and Gibbs for 17 runs. Rudolph (222) and Dippenaar (177) put on 429 runs for the unbroken third wicket stand, the best ever for any wicket for South Africa, as they declared at 2 for 470 towards the end of the first session. In the process, they broke the previous record that belonged to Graeme Smith and Herschelle Gibbs, who put on 368 runs for the first wicket against Pakistan in the same year.
