Australia faced Sri Lanka in a crunch Group A game at Sydney Cricket Ground. Australia batted first after winning the toss and started towards a big total. Steven Smith (72), Michael Clarke (68), Shane Watson (67) and the second fastest hundred in World Cup from Glen Maxwell (102) took Australia to 376/9 in 50 overs. Sri Lanka tried valiantly to chase the total with Kumar Sangakkara scoring 104, Tillakaratne Dilshan scoring 62 and Dinesh Chandimal making 50 but well short by 64 runs, bowling out for 312/9.
