T20 cricket has dominated the cricketing arena since the inception of the World T20 in 2007. The inaugural tournament added the much-needed spice to cricket in the past few years. While consistent performances are always sought after in the shortest format of the game, the top scores are the ones that stand out. The top players who stand out with these massive scores are forever remembered. That said. Here is a list of those batsmen who made the top scores on the biggest stage – ‘The World T20’.

<strong>10. Mahela Jayawardene &#8211; 98* v West Indies (2010):</strong>

Mahela Jayawardene features for the second time on the list with an unbeaten 98 against the West Indies at Barbados in the 2010 edition of the World T20. Once again, playing in the opening slot ahead of Sanath Jayasuriya, Jayawardene mixed class and aggression as he slammed 9 fours and 4 sixes. The Lankans won by 57 runs.

<strong>9. Luke Wright  &#8211; 99* v Afghanistan (2012):</strong>

Luke Wright remains to be the only England player to feature on this list. Having been finally given his opportunity to bat up the order, he took the opportunity with both hands with a brilliant 99 against Afghanistan at Colombo. He smashed 8 fours and 6 sixes in his compilation as the Brits went on to win the match rather comfortably by 116 runs. This remains to be one of the largest margins of victory for England.

<strong>8. Mahela Jayawardene &#8211; 100 v Zimbabwe (2010):</strong>

Mahela Jayawardene’s best T20 innings have come when he has opened the batting. He scored an impressive 100 against Zimbabwe at Providence in the 2010 edition of the World T20. Rain, however, played spoilsport as the opposition batted just the 5 overs. The Sri Lankans picked up a 14 run win by the D/L method. Nevertheless, Jayawardene’s impressive century included 10 boundaries and 4 sixes.

<strong>7. Chris Gayle – 100* v England (2016)</strong>

Chris Gayle once again stamped his authority in the T20 format when he single-handedly enabled West Indies to chase down the challenging 183 run target set by England at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Gayle opened the innings with Johnston Charles but lost his partner quickly in the first over itself. But, Gayle was on song and went on to bat till the end of the chase, completely deflating the English bowlers. He scored his century 100 runs from just 48 balls and remained unconquered as West Indies completed the chase with six wickets in hand. His knock was laced with 5 boundaries and 11 sixes including 3 in 3 balls in the 14th over. His 11 sixes in the match happen to be the 12th time when he has hit 10 or more sixes in an innings no other batsman has done it even twice.

Apart from being the only Indian centurion in World T20s, Suresh Raina made the century against perhaps the best opposition at Gros Islet in the 2010 World T20. The Proteas failed to put a stop to the irresistible Raina as he went along his merry way en route to his century. His compilation included 9 fours and 5 sixes. The Indians claimed a 14 wicket win as their campaign got off to a brilliant start.

26-year old Tamim Iqbal is the only Bangladeshi batsman to feature on this elite list. Having missed the 2016 edition of the Asia Cup, Tamim made his comeback to the Bangladesh cricket team with a bang in the qualifier of the World T20 2016 at Dharamsala. His innings of 103* against Oman accounted for almost 65% of the Bangladeshi score. Bangladesh eventually clinched the rain-hit encounter by 54 runs, thus securing qualification to the Super 10s of the Wolrd T20.

<strong>4. Ahmed Shehzad &#8211; 111* v Bangladesh (2014):</strong>

Pakistani opening batsman Ahmed Shehzad scored a masterly and unbeaten 111 against Bangladesh at Dhaka in the 2014 World T20. Pakistan lost their top order early on in the innings courtesy of some amazing bowling from Abdur Razzak. However, Shehzad had other plans as he put the Bangladesh attack to the sword. Pakistan picked up an impressive win by 50 runs.

<strong>3. Alex Hales &#8211; 116* v Sri Lanka (2014):</strong>

The century from Alex Hales at Chittagong in the 2014 edition of the World T20 has to be one of the stand-out performances in T20 cricket. Chasing on a trying wicket, England lost Michael Lumb and Moeen Ali in the first over. Hales and Eoin Morgan stitched a useful partnership of 152 with Alex Hales smashing a majority of those runs. Hales finished off on an unbeaten 116 off 64 balls, with 11 fours and 6 sixes. England went on to claim victory by 6 wickets.

<strong>2. Chris Gayle &#8211; 117 v South Africa (2007):</strong>

The opening match of the inaugural World T20 in South Africa will always be remembered fondly by all cricket fans around the world. One of the reasons they will remember it will definitely be for Chris Gayle’s century against the Proteas at Johannesburg. Gayle smashed 10 sixes and 7 fours as he decimated the South African bowling. However, despite Gayle’s best efforts, the Proteas secured an 8-wicket win.

Recently retired New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum smashed 123 off 58 balls against Bangladesh at Pallekele in the 2012 edition of the World T20. Batting first, the Kiwis lost Martin Guptill early on in the innings. However, McCullum promoted himself to the No.3 slot in the batting order and simply scythed through the Bangladesh bowling attack. Striking at a mammoth 212, McCullum smashed 11 boundaries and 7 sixes. The Black Caps clinched the match by 59 runs.

<p>Recently retired New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum smashed 123 off 58 balls against Bangladesh at Pallekele in the 2012 edition of the World T20. Batting first, the Kiwis lost Martin Guptill early on in the innings. However, McCullum promoted himself to the No.3 slot in the batting order and simply scythed through the Bangladesh bowling attack. Striking at a mammoth 212, McCullum smashed 11 boundaries and 7 sixes. The Black Caps clinched the match by 59 runs.</p>

<p>T20 cricket has dominated the cricketing arena since the inception of the World T20 in 2007. The inaugural tournament added the much-needed spice to cricket in the past few years. While consistent performances are always sought after in the shortest format of the game, the top scores are the ones that stand out. The top players who stand out with these massive scores are forever remembered. That said. Here is a list of those batsmen who made the top scores on the biggest stage – ‘The World T20’.</p>
<h4><strong>10. Mahela Jayawardene &#8211; 98* v West Indies (2010):</strong></h4>

<p>Mahela Jayawardene features for the second time on the list with an unbeaten 98 against the West Indies at Barbados in the 2010 edition of the World T20. Once again, playing in the opening slot ahead of Sanath Jayasuriya, Jayawardene mixed class and aggression as he slammed 9 fours and 4 sixes. The Lankans won by 57 runs.</p>
<h4><strong>9. Luke Wright  &#8211; 99* v Afghanistan (2012):</strong></h4>

<p>Luke Wright remains to be the only England player to feature on this list. Having been finally given his opportunity to bat up the order, he took the opportunity with both hands with a brilliant 99 against Afghanistan at Colombo. He smashed 8 fours and 6 sixes in his compilation as the Brits went on to win the match rather comfortably by 116 runs. This remains to be one of the largest margins of victory for England.</p>
<h4><strong>8. Mahela Jayawardene &#8211; 100 v Zimbabwe (2010):</strong></h4>

<p>Mahela Jayawardene’s best T20 innings have come when he has opened the batting. He scored an impressive 100 against Zimbabwe at Providence in the 2010 edition of the World T20. Rain, however, played spoilsport as the opposition batted just the 5 overs. The Sri Lankans picked up a 14 run win by the D/L method. Nevertheless, Jayawardene’s impressive century included 10 boundaries and 4 sixes.</p>

<h4><strong>7. Chris Gayle – 100* v England (2016)</strong></h4>

<p>Chris Gayle once again stamped his authority in the T20 format when he single-handedly enabled West Indies to chase down the challenging 183 run target set by England at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Gayle opened the innings with Johnston Charles but lost his partner quickly in the first over itself. But, Gayle was on song and went on to bat till the end of the chase, completely deflating the English bowlers. He scored his century 100 runs from just 48 balls and remained unconquered as West Indies completed the chase with six wickets in hand. His knock was laced with 5 boundaries and 11 sixes including 3 in 3 balls in the 14th over. His 11 sixes in the match happen to be the 12th time when he has hit 10 or more sixes in an innings no other batsman has done it even twice.</p>

<h4><strong>6. Suresh Raina &#8211; 101 v South Africa (2010):</strong></h4>

<p>Apart from being the only Indian centurion in World T20s, Suresh Raina made the century against perhaps the best opposition at Gros Islet in the 2010 World T20. The Proteas failed to put a stop to the irresistible Raina as he went along his merry way en route to his century. His compilation included 9 fours and 5 sixes. The Indians claimed a 14 wicket win as their campaign got off to a brilliant start.</p>

<h4><strong>5. Tamim Iqbal &#8211; 103* v Oman (2016):</strong></h4>

<p>26-year old Tamim Iqbal is the only Bangladeshi batsman to feature on this elite list. Having missed the 2016 edition of the Asia Cup, Tamim made his comeback to the Bangladesh cricket team with a bang in the qualifier of the World T20 2016 at Dharamsala. His innings of 103* against Oman accounted for almost 65% of the Bangladeshi score. Bangladesh eventually clinched the rain-hit encounter by 54 runs, thus securing qualification to the Super 10s of the Wolrd T20.</p>
<h4><strong>4. Ahmed Shehzad &#8211; 111* v Bangladesh (2014):</strong></h4>

<p>Pakistani opening batsman Ahmed Shehzad scored a masterly and unbeaten 111 against Bangladesh at Dhaka in the 2014 World T20. Pakistan lost their top order early on in the innings courtesy of some amazing bowling from Abdur Razzak. However, Shehzad had other plans as he put the Bangladesh attack to the sword. Pakistan picked up an impressive win by 50 runs.</p>
<h4><strong>3. Alex Hales &#8211; 116* v Sri Lanka (2014):</strong></h4>

<p>The century from Alex Hales at Chittagong in the 2014 edition of the World T20 has to be one of the stand-out performances in T20 cricket. Chasing on a trying wicket, England lost Michael Lumb and Moeen Ali in the first over. Hales and Eoin Morgan stitched a useful partnership of 152 with Alex Hales smashing a majority of those runs. Hales finished off on an unbeaten 116 off 64 balls, with 11 fours and 6 sixes. England went on to claim victory by 6 wickets.</p>
<h4><strong>2. Chris Gayle &#8211; 117 v South Africa (2007):</strong></h4>

<p>The opening match of the inaugural World T20 in South Africa will always be remembered fondly by all cricket fans around the world. One of the reasons they will remember it will definitely be for Chris Gayle’s century against the Proteas at Johannesburg. Gayle smashed 10 sixes and 7 fours as he decimated the South African bowling. However, despite Gayle’s best efforts, the Proteas secured an 8-wicket win.</p>
