The first Test match to go into the sixth day also produced the first instance of a team winning after being asked to follow-on. Australia’s classy all-rounder George Giffen scored 161 in the first innings of the 1894 timeless Test match against England in Sydney. His team piled up 586 and in reply, the visitors were bowled out for 325 with Giffen taking 4 wickets. He again took 4 in England’s second innings of 437/10. A target of 177 proved beyond the reach of the home team by 11 runs despite Giffen’s 41 and Joe Darling’s 53.
