Top 10 Most successful Test captains

When we talk about most successful Test captains, many familiar names crop up. Today, we look at the leaders who ignited passion and fire to go the distance and produce some fabulous results on the home soil and foreign tourneys. From West Indian master-class Sir Viv Richards to Australian great Mark Taylor. India’s captain cool also features in the list, whereas champion batsman Ricky Ponting also ticks in the record book. Let’s have a look at the Top 10 Most successful Test captains: 10. Mark Taylor (Australia) – 26 wins: Mark Taylor. (© Ben Radford /Allsport) The former Australian skipper has led the Kangaroo pack on 50 occasions. Winning 26 times and losing out on 13 occasions he stands at 10th position in the list of the most successful Test captains. 11 matches ended in a draw as the average reads 35.07 with a highest team total of 628. Taylor himself, was a stylish batsman, scoring 7525 runs along with 19 centuries and 40 fifties. 9. Sir Viv Richards (West Indies) – 27 wins: Viv Richards. (© Getty Images) The Swagger star Richards was brutal with the bat. But interestingly, Richards- the skipper had a good record too. West Indies won 27 times and lost on 8 occasions under Richards while they played out 15 draws. The highest team total under the stylish batsman is 569 while the lowest stands at 53. 8. MS Dhoni (India) – 27 wins: MS Dhoni. (© Getty Images) The Indian skipper is well known for his midas touch. MS Dhoni led India on 60 occasions in Test matches. Under captain cool, India won 27, lost 18 and drew 15 matches at an average of 37.00. 726 is the highest score while 93 has been registered as the lowest total under him. 7. Hansie Cronje (South Africa) – 27 wins Hansie Cronje. His average was 34.03 with 621 being the highest team total. 6. Stephen Fleming (New Zealand) – 28 wins Stephen Fleming. (© Getty Images) The best captains that had led the New Zealand team, Stephen Fleming fielded his team in Tests on 80 occasions, winning 28, losing 27 and settling for a draw 25 times. New Zealand piled up 630 on one occasion under Fleming, while 73 was their lowest total. 5. Allan Border (Australia) – 32 wins Allan Border. Under Border, Australia won 32 times, losing on 22 occasions and 38 was the commander in drawn matches. Australia’s average under Allan Border reads 36.19. Australia notched up 653 as their best while a certain bad day saw 103 as their lowest total. 4. Clive Lloyd (West Indies) – 36 wins Clive Lloyd. A spirited West Indies won 36 Test matches under the master while losing on 12 occasions and 26 matches were noted as a draw. West Indies piled up 687 under Clive while 128 was their lowest total. 3. Steve Waugh (Australia) – 41 wins Steve Waugh. (© Getty Images) The Australian skipper led his country in 57 Tests. Australia won the match on 41 occasions, lost 9; while 7 matches ended in a draw. The Aussies registered 735 as their highest total and 127 was the lowest under Waugh. The average reads a solid 43.11 in 97 innings. 2. Ricky Ponting (Australia) – 48 wins: Ricky Ponting. As a batsman, Ricky Ponting will go down as one of the best right handers to have played the game, while his captaincy speaks volumes about his leadership skills. “Punter” captained Australia in 77 Test matches, winning 48 and losing out on 16 occasions. Ricky Ponting settled for a draw in 13 matches. During the period, Australia piled up 674 once; while 88 was their lowest total. 1. Graeme Smith (South Africa) – 53 wins: Graeme Smith. (© Getty Images) The former South African skipper was armed with captaincy at a very early stage in his career. Graeme Smith led the Proteas in 109 Test matches. The South African captain won 53 Tests and leads the chart of the most successful Test captains while his team was at the losing end on 29 occasions. South Africa played out a draw 27 times under “Biff”. While Smith was at the top, South Africa registered a score of 682, and 84 turned out to be their lowest.
