1. Steve Smith
Steven Smith, arguably the best Test batsman of this generation, has scored tons of runs all around the globe. He has an excellent record in Asia and his staggering numbers tell the tale. Playing 13 Test matches in the subcontinent, the right-handed batsman has amassed 1200 runs with an average of exactly 48. The former Australian skipper has four centuries and five fifties to his name.
The Sydney-born is adept at using his feet against the spinners which is a prerequisite for anyone facing spin bowling. His solid defence, unreal mental strength, and temperament are also vital factors behind his success. Since Smith’s first match in Asia (14 March 2013), no non-Asian batsman has scored more runs (1200) than him; none has faced more balls (2541) than him; nobody has more hundreds (5) than him in the subcontinent. These stats are proof of his sheer quality to adapt to the conditions extremely well.
Smith, who is equally good against pacers and spinners, averages about 50 against the slower bowlers. Who can forget his incredible knock in the first Test match of Australia’s tour to India 2017 at Pune? A game in which the hosts were bowled out for 105 and 107 in both innings, the 30-year-old played an astonishing knock of 109 runs in the third innings. Not to forget, the deck used in that match was a rank turner and he was up against the quality of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.
