Top 5 batsmen with most ODI runs in a single calendar year
In the five-decade history of ODI cricket, there have been a handful of occasions when a batsman has owned an entire calendar year.
1. Sachin Tendulkar (1894 Runs)
The ‘Little Master’ features in the list for the second time. In the year 1998, Sachin Tendulkar was at the peak of his batting prowess. He dissected the best attacks in the world with surgical mastery and ruled the cricketing world with his exploits with the willow.
Tendulkar aggregated a mammoth 1894 ODI runs in the year 1998, inclusive of 9 centuries and 7 half-centuries at an average of 65.31. The 143 that the Master Blaster scored against the Aussies in April 1998, famously called the ‘Desert Storm innings’ in Sharjah is hailed as one of the greatest knocks in the history of the game.
22 years have passed, and the numbers that Tendulkar generated in 1998 have not yet been surpassed. Tendulkar retired from ODI cricket in the year 2012, leaving behind a legacy that will live on forever.
