Movies and sports are two extremes of entertainment for the masses across the world. The former is mostly work of fiction while the latter is actually action on the field. Similarly, Marvel and Cricket are the two sides of the same coin and when one would try and draw lines of connection between them, they are bound to be left amused.
While Marvel consists of some of our favourite characters in the likes of Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Loki, and Spider Man, Cricket has never been short of the on-field superstars. Marvel has billions of fans across the globe and so does cricket with over a billion people in India being crazy followers.
In a rare attempt to connect two different spectra, we have come up with the top 5 cricketing superstars and their equivalents in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
5. Trent Boult – Thor
If there’s one thing that amazes me about Thor, it’s all about his agility and physical strength. With the help of Mjolnir, Thor can travel faster than light, enabling him to travel across galaxies.
Our very own Trent Boult, on the other hand, is one of the fastest you’ll ever see. If not the most agile, Boult is one of the most agile players in the Blackcaps’ squad. He has the remarkable ability to bowl at speeds of 145+ kph and to even reach 140, tremendous shoulder and back muscle strength is required, let alone 145+.
When both these men are at work, things are bound to happen and by things I mean, these two gentlemen are the playmakers in their respective fields and underestimating them would be a grave sin to commit.
4. AB de Villiers – Spider Man
Ask them to perform weirdly exasperating stunts, they’ll do it. Ask them to put away mighty opposition with a classy but single move, they’ll do it. AB de Villiers and the Spider Man have a lot in common than the usual MCU and a cricket fan would think.
De Villiers is known for his breathtaking stunts on the field. Plucking catches out of nowhere, scooping Dale Steyn for a maximum and manufacturing insane shots, ABD is the one guy who can be counted upon to send chills down the opposition’s spine.
Back in Avengers 4, we saw Spider Man giving Thanos a hard time and for a man of his age, ABD is very agile. According to the comics, the Spider Man stands at 1.78m, exactly similar to the former South African skipper’s stature of 1.78m. Even though de Villiers has retired from International cricket, he still continues to inspire and entertain us with his exploits on the field, something that strikes a resemblance tone to the man with the Spidey sense.
3. Kane Williamson – Ant Man
Ant Man is the perfect ambassador for the tagline, ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’. His short stature has not come as a disadvantage to him but has become one of his greatest strengths. For the matter of fact, Ant Man took down Iron Man, someone that even the strongest of villains in the MCU could not take down.
Standing at 5’8″, Kane is one of the safest fielders you can position at the boundary and is the best batsman in the world at the moment, after Virat Kohli. In simple words, Kane hasn’t let his height take over him but has used it effectively and optimally to transform himself into the one of the very best that the cricketing world has seen.
In a sport like cricket, short height would be regarded as a disadvantage by many but Kane is a prime example of succeeding despite having his back against the wall. Ant Man and Kane resemble each other in being stalwarts in their respective fields. They get the job done more often than not.
2. Steve Smith – Captain America
Good leadership skills- Check
Enough controversies to be involved in- Check
Still an integral part of the team- Check
Not on so good terms with Iron Man- Check
All these just make Steve Smith and Captain America one. Steve Rogers shares a bit of enmity with Tony Stark and much to the similarity, Virat Kohli doesn’t really like Steve Smith because of his antics on the field. Well, Tony’s hate towards Steve is justified as Steve’s best friend killed Tony’s parents and the “Skipper” actually hid it from his former friend.
While Smith’s leadership qualities need to be given a word of mention, Rogers’ deserves some respect as well. No doubt, they are excellent captains and their teammates actually listen to them because their judgement can be trusted. Smith and Rogers don’t allow their emotions to cloud their judgements and both of them are pretty well accustomed to leading dominant teams. The former Australian skipper’s and the MCU’s skipper, Captain America’s life controversy-ridden, yet fascinating to a fan.
1. Virat Kohli – Iron Man
Probably the coolest superhero of all time, Iron Man is a hot-head too. Always there to save the day, Virat and Tony Stark learn from their mistakes and what really unites them is that they make sure that they are better than what they used to be. Back when Ant Man took down Iron Man, Tony Stark actually built a nano-suit to ensure that something like that never actually takes place in the future.
In 2014, Virat had his fair share of failures and ever since that dismal tour of England, the Indian skipper hasn’t looked back. He has taken his game to a whole new level and looks just unstoppable at the moment.
Both these men have had a history of letting their emotions take over themselves, losing their cool in the process but that’s what actually adds to the spice in their character. Without this similar yet fascinating checkpoint, Virat and Tony wouldn’t have been so cool as we thought them to be.
Admired by many, hated by many, Virat and Stark continue to impress us and to do whatever it takes to cross the finish line, even if it means that it’d involve taking full responsibility.
