Top 5 death bowlers in the league stages of IPL 2017

Death bowling had been a major concern for the Indian team over the past few years. Indians were found wanting during the death under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Watching the likes of Lasith Malinga and Dwayne Bravo, Indians too have cropped up a major contingency of effective death bowlers in this edition of the league. The Indian bowlers have completely overshadowed the overseas contingent in IPL 2017 with some exceptional performances during the crunch situations of the matches. With the likes of McCleneghan, Johnson and Woakes featuring in the tournament, it is heartening to see Indians stand out with their performances consistently. All the top 5 bowlers in this list comprise of young Indians who have done exceptionally well in the league stages. Here are the five most notable performers with the ball during the death overs. 1. Jasprit Bumrah (Mumbai Indians) Jasprit Bumrah. (Photo Source: Twitter) One can agree about the monumental role Lasith Malinga has played over the years for his team, in all the seasons, since the inception of the IPL. But in this season, Malinga was completely eclipsed by Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling prowess – his toe-crushing yorkers and deceiving slower deliveries. Bumrah has also been amongst the wickets already in the tournament as he clinched as many as 15 wickets in 13 games he has played so far, with an exceptional economy of 7.6. The Super over against the Gujarat Lions will be fondly remembered by many for a long time. Bumrah was handed the ball with 12 runs to defend in the Super over, facing the likes of Brendon McCullum and Aaron Finch. He conceded only 6 runs in the 8 deliveries he bowled, to prove his mettle with the ball during the death. 2. Jaydev Unadkat Jaydev Unadkat of Rising Pune Supergiant. (Photo: IANS) Jaydev Unadkat proved to be the surprise package in the tournament as he is currently giving Bhuvaneshwar Kumar a stiff competition for the Purple cap. This Supergiant has been exceptional, both with the new ball as well as at the death. With Pune team in distress about the seam bowling option, given that Ashok Dinda was super expensive in the first few matches, Unadkat put his hand up and performed for his franchise. He has taken as many as 21 wickets in just 10 games at an exceptional economy of 7.3 only. Unadkat’s standout performance came against Sunrisers Hyderabad where he picked a five-wicket haul and delivered a hat-trick maiden in the final over of the match defending 12 runs in a pressure situation. The Saurashtrian has been miserly with his mix of deadly yorkers around the wicket and variations. 3. Sandeep Sharma Kings XI Punjab player Sandeep Sharma. (Photo: Surjeet Yadav/IANS) Kings XI Punjab took the field with three Sharmas this season, i.e., Mohit Sharma, Sandeep Sharma and Ishant Sharma but it was Sandeep impressed the most at the death as well as in the powerplay. For a long time, Sandeep was in contention for the Purple Cap but missed out by a whisker. Overall, Sandeep has taken as many as 17 wickets in the tournament and has been the spearhead of Kings XI Punjab’s pace attack in all the matches. After setting a mammoth total against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede, Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard threatened to chase down KXIP’s total of 230. However, Sandeep Sharma managed to pull it back for the visitors with a brilliant penultimate over where he conceded only 7 runs and made the task of Mohit Sharma easier to defend 16 runs in the last over. 4. Siddarth Kaul Siddarth Kaul. (Photo Source: Twitter) Many may not remember but Siddarth Kaul originated his career from the same starting point as the likes of Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja and Manish Tiwary in the U19 World Cup of 2008. In contrast to the trio, Kaul has led a different career as he has largely played only domestic cricket and found it difficult to find his feet in the IPL over the years. However, Siddharth Kaul has come into his own in this edition of the IPL. With the likes of Mustafizur Rahman, Ashish Nehra, Mohammed Siraj and Bhuvaneshvar Kumar, Kaul went on to make a reputation for himself in the death overs. In matches he has played, Siddarth Kaul claimed 16 wickets already in the tournament with a few more to go, given that SRH still have a couple of matches in hand. His yorkers and slower ones have been difficult to dispatch for the batsmen. 5. Bhuvneshwar Kumar Bhuvneshwar Kumar. (Photo Source: Twitter) Bhuvneshwar Kumar is all set to retain his Purple Cap this season as he has clinched 25 wickets in 13 matches at an economy of 6.9. Bhuvi has been the spearhead of the Hyderabadi pace attack as he was miserly during the death overs and has taken crucial wickets to turn the game towards his side. BK currently picks up wickets every two overs at a meagre average of 13 runs only. In the match against Kings XI Punjab, Manan Vohra threatened to take the match away from the Sunrisers’ as he scored 96 in no time. Kings XI were on course for a victory from the jaws of defeat. Bhuvi kept a cool head on his shoulders and bowled a brilliant yorker to dismiss Vohra and it was game set match for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
