Top 5 international teams to play most ODIs

India locked horns with the West Indies in the first ODI at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. While it was the team’s first home series of the year, there were two things for the Men In Blue to be happy about. This match officially marked Rohit Sharma’s term as the full-time ODI captain and the Indian team also achieved a unique team of making 1000 appearances in One Day Internationals. Rohit succeeded Virat Kohli as the One Day skipper after the latter was sacked from the post by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in December. It needs to be noted that India is the first and only team to feature in 1000 ODIs ever since the country’s first appearance in this format way back in 1974. Coincidentally, the late Mumbai player Ajit Wadekar had led India in their maiden One Day International, another Mumbaikar Rohit Sharma captained the Men In Blue in their 1000th appearance nearly five decades later. As the two-time ODI world champions made history on Sunday, here’s a look at the other teams that have made the most number of appearances in the 50-overs format. Five teams to have played the most number of ODIs 5. West Indies- 835 West Indies. The Windies had dominated One Day International cricket and were literally considered to be invincible in this format as they made final appearances in the first three editions of the World Cup in 1975, 1979, and 1983 winning the first two of them without breaking a sweat. They lost to India in 1983. Apart from this, the Calypso Boys had also won the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy. In the 835 ODI appearances from 1973 to 2022, the Caribbeans have won 406 of them and lost 388 including 10 ties games and 30 no results with a win percentage of 51.11. 4. Sri Lanka- 870 Sri Lanka. They rose to prominence in the mid-90s and were one of the dominant sides in the 2000s and in fact, were a really good side till the 2015 World Cup. The Lankans won their first and only World Cup in 1996 and also made two final appearances in the 2007 and 2011 editions losing to Australia and India. Sri Lanka were declared joint winners with India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2002 and also have five Asia Cups which is the second-highest. In the 870 appearances that the former champions have made in this format from 1975 to 2022, they have won 395 ODIs, lost 432 including five ties, and 83 no results with a winning percentage of 47.77. 3. The Men in Green won their first and only World Cup in 1992 under the great Imran Khan and finished as the runners-up in the 1999 edition losing to Australia. The Indian team’s arch-rivals have also won two Asia Cups and the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 in the 50-overs format. In the 936 games that Pakistan have played so far from 1973 to 2021, they have won 490, lost 417 of them including nine ties, 20 no results with a winning percentage of 53.98. 2. At the same time, they are also the most successful side as far as achievements are concerned, having won five World Cups (1987, 1999,2003,2007, and 2015). They had also made the finals of the 1975 and 1996 editions. They are arguably the most dominant team in this format in the last five decades. Apart from this, the Aussies also won back-to-back ICC Champions Trophy titles in 2006 and 2009 respectively. In the 958 matches that Australia have featured in from 1971 to 2021, they have registered 581 wins, 334 losses including nine ties, and 34 no results with a winning percentage of 63.36. 1. The Indian team have been a world-class side since the 80s. Having won their maiden ODI World Cup in 1983, India went on to win the World Championship of Cricket in 1985 and also won the 2011 World Cup as well as the ICC Champions Trophy 2013. They also have a record seven Asia Cups to their name. Apart from that, the Men In Blue had also finished as the runners-up in the ICC knockout Trophy 2000, World Cup 2003, and the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 respectively. In the 1000 matches that Team India have featured in, they have registered 518 wins, 431 losses, nine ties, and 41 no results with a win percentage of 54.54.
