Williamson had an eventful year as captain and batter.
2. 49 and 52* against India, WTC Finals
In the inaugural World Test Championship Finals versus India in June 2021, Kane Williamson was at his absolute best. Despite the fact that his scorecard didn’t look particularly spectacular, his performances helped New Zealand win their first ICC title in the game’s history. In the first innings of New Zealand‘s batting, Williamson hit a vital 49 runs, then followed with a brave 52* off just 89 balls to comfortably chase the target of 139 runs in just two sessions.
Williamson smashed 49 runs off 177 balls to demolish India’s fearsome pace trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma. He also played with finesse, elegantly countering Ashwin’s several variations. In the first innings of the Finals, his temperament to stay firm and block the good balls allowed New Zealand to build a lead against India.
After that, he continued his rich vein of form with a 52* from just 89 deliveries. With New Zealand losing two quick wickets and Ashwin looking dangerous with the ball, this innings was even more crucial. Williamson, along with Ross Taylor, paid respect to Ashwin and capitalised on other bowlers. This innings came on the sixth (reserve) day of the Test match, emphasising its significance in a situation where the pitch had already seen enough wear and tear after five days.
