Top 5 Lowest Totals In Ranji Trophy: Recently Mumbai was bowled out for 44 against Karnataka in a Ranji Trophy encounter. This bought out the subject of the lowest scores in Ranji Trophy history. The Ranji trophy was first played in 1934/35 after the then Indian Board decided to have a domestic competition and the honorable Maharaja of Patiala donated the trophy to be presented to the champions.

The trophy was named after the best Indian player of that time, England and Sussex cricketer Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji (Jam Sahib of Nawanagar, also known as &#8220;Ranji&#8221;).

5. 23- Jammu and Kashmir v Haryana 1977/78

This match was played at Moti Lal School of Sports Ground, Rai, Haryana. It also featured a young Kapil Dev. Haryana batted first and scored 330/5 dec. with R Anand scoring an unbeaten 150.  Jammu Kashmir was dismissed for just 93 runs in their first innings. Left arm Rajinder Goel picked up 6/25 with his loopy left arm spinners.

The second innings went worst for the Jammu and Kashmir team as they were bowled out for a record low score of 23 runs with Rajinder Goel picking up 7/4 and 13/29 in the match. Kapil Dev also picked up 3/15 in the Jaamu Kashmir innings. Jammu Kashmir lost the match by an innings and 214 runs. 4. 23- Jammu and Kashmir v Delhi 1960/61

The match took place in Srinagar and Delhi batted first. Delhi scored a massive 385/3 dec. with R Diwan (150*) and P Bhatia (102) being the top scorers for the Delhi team. Jammu and Kashmir in their first innings were dismissed for a paltry 23 runs with Rajinder Pal taking 6/3 and Sitaram taking 4/19.

Delhi dismissed them for 28 in the second innings to win by an innings and 329 runs. This time though Sitaram took 7/11 and Rajinder Pal took 3/17 to demolish a hapless Jammu and Kashmir team. 3. 23- Sind v Southern Punjab 1938/39 This match was played between the now defunct teams of Sind and Southern Punjab in Patiala on 10-12 Feb 1939.

Sind batted first and scored 339 with Abbas Khan (84) and W Mascarenhas (64) being the highest scorers. Southern Punjab’s reply was 197 runs with Murawaat Khan top scoring with 47 runs. But the second innings for Sind turned out to be a disaster with India bowler Mohd. Nissar taking 6/17 and Lala Amarnath taking 4/2. Sind were dismissed for just 23 runs and Southern Punjab chased down the needed 168 runs with 7 wickets in hand. Lala Amarnath remained unbeaten of 95. 2. 22- Southern Punjab v Northern India 1934/35

Southern Punjab played Northern India in the inaugural Ranji trophy season match in Amritsar. Northern India batted first and scored 142 runs with Muzaffar Baig top scoring with 45 runs.  Southern Punjab replied with 135 runs with Northern India’s Jaqa Bilani taking 4/46. Northern India then scored 106 in their second innings with Mohd. Nissar taking 4/35.

Set with 114 to win, the Southern Punjab team collapsed to 22 all out in 16.1 overs. Baqa Jilani took 5/7 and dismissed Lall Singh, Capt Joginder Singh and Yuvraj of Patiala in 3 consecutive deliveries to take the first ever hat-trick of Ranji trophy. Northern India won by 91 runs. 1. 21- Hyderabad v Rajasthan 2010/11

The lowest score in Ranji trophy history surprising was made in more modern times. Hyderabad faced Rajasthan in Jaipur.

Hyderabad batted first in the match and scored the lowest total in Ranji Trophy of just 21 runs in 15.3 overs. The whole innings last just 78 minutes.  Rajasthan’s debut pacer  Deepak Chahar took 8/10 in his very first outing. Rajasthan scored a mammoth 403 with Captain Hrishikesh Kanitkar scoring 193* and Aakash Chopra making 65. Hyderabad’s second inning was no better, but hey managed to make 126 runs this time with M Arjun scoring 33 runs. Deepak Chahar took 4 /54 to complete 10 wickets on debut and Pankaj Singh took 4 /45. Rajasthan won the match by an innings and 256 runs.
