1. 23 runs – Rising Pune Supergiant vs Kings XI Punjab, Vizag 2016
It was the first season for the Rising Pune Supergiant in the IPL. They were already out of the contention for the playoffs, but captain MS Dhoni pulled off his magic to give something to his fans in their last league fixture. It all happened in Match 53 between Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) and Kings XI Punjab (now known as Punjab Kings) in IPL 2016.
The Kings posted a score of 172 on the board, with the 30 from Hashim Amla and quickfire half-centuries from Murali Vijay and Gurkeerat Singh Mann. The key bowler for Pune was Ravichandran Ashwin, who finished with figures of 4/34 off four overs. In response, RPS had an average start with the openers Ajinkya Rahane (19) and Usman Khawaja (30) playing cautiously.
The middle-order didn’t support the team well, with George Bailey and Saurabh Tiwary failing to provide hefty contributions. However, it was a quick 58-run stand between Thisara Perera (23) and Dhoni, which steered the team to get close to the opposition’s score. With 23 needed off the last over, youngster Axar Patel was up against the finisher Dhoni. Patel started with a dot and a wide, but Dhoni hit a six off the second ball. Then the third ball returned a dot ball, which mounted the pressure on Dhoni. In the subsequent balls, the former India captain pulled off heroics to hit a four, and two sixes respectively, and finished with 64* off 32 balls.
